Dry Falls, Highlands

4.9
#1 of 15 in Things to do in Highlands
Unlike the name suggests, at you will see a lot of rushing water in the scenic Nantahala National Forest. The 24.4 m (80 ft) falls steam from an overhanging cliff, which you can walk under on the path and stay relatively dry. However, when it rains and the water flow is higher, you might get sprayed. Near the parking area is an observation deck where you can take in the entire waterfall. To experience the falls up close, walk the short, paved trail. Make sure to protect your camera and other electronic equipment, and consider bringing an umbrella or waterproof jacket. Admission is free and the parking area has restrooms. • You must stop and check this one out if you are in the area. Nice parking area right off the main road. Steps and handrails so the hike down is not bad. It is a big slick in places due to the water an...  more »

  • This place is amazing. One of my favorite waterfalls. In the winter, it's not as great. Everything is frozen over, the walkway is very icy. Don't attempt to cross or walk on the ice. You will slip and fall. The only way I was able to record footage close up of the waterfall was by holding onto the railing for dear life and moving very slowly over the ice. However, I wouldn't go under it. There's a warning that the rocks can fall and there have been fatalities.
  • Dry falls which can be easily viewed from a platform off the parking lot is spectacular. Take a short descent down some stairs where you can get very close and walk behind the falls. This beautiful falls is located just outside Highlands NC which is a very quaint mountain town that is definitely worth visiting. Many shops and restaurants (however some do close for the winter).
  • Great waterfall, really neat to be able to walk behind it. Can be closed due to weather in winter and crowded in the summer. Can be very romantic place, it is where I proposed to my wife in 2014.
  • Excellent waterfall that's literally right off text road. Super easy for little ones to trek as it's simply going approx. 0.1-0.2 miles. Didn't see any public restrooms, and it was kind of in the middle of nowhere, but despite these shortcomings, it's an awesome waterfall.
  • Gorgeous, absolutely one of the most beautiful waterfalls I've seen. Worth the travel.
