Dry Falls, Highlands

4.9
#1 of 11 in Things to do in Highlands
Unlike the name suggests, at you will see a lot of rushing water in the scenic Nantahala National Forest. The 24.4 m (80 ft) falls steam from an overhanging cliff, which you can walk under on the path and stay relatively dry. However, when it rains and the water flow is higher, you might get sprayed. Near the parking area is an observation deck where you can take in the entire waterfall. To experience the falls up close, walk the short, paved trail. Make sure to protect your camera and other electronic equipment, and consider bringing an umbrella or waterproof jacket. Admission is free and the parking area has restrooms. • Stopped by during the winter and it was cold and icy but, was not to be missed. The falls were beautiful. If you are anywhere in the area, plan to go here.  more »
  • On the day of our visit the stairs were closed off due to ice, but you could still view from the accessibility platform. It was a magnificent sight of ice and power. This is an easy waterfall to visit...  more »

  • This place is amazing. One of my favorite waterfalls. In the winter, it's not as great. Everything is frozen over, the walkway is very icy. Don't attempt to cross or walk on the ice. You will slip and fall. The only way I was able to record footage close up of the waterfall was by holding onto the railing for dear life and moving very slowly over the ice. However, I wouldn't go under it. There's a warning that the rocks can fall and there have been fatalities.
  • Dry falls which can be easily viewed from a platform off the parking lot is spectacular. Take a short descent down some stairs where you can get very close and walk behind the falls. This beautiful falls is located just outside Highlands NC which is a very quaint mountain town that is definitely worth visiting. Many shops and restaurants (however some do close for the winter).
  • Excellent waterfall that's literally right off text road. Super easy for little ones to trek as it's simply going approx. 0.1-0.2 miles. Didn't see any public restrooms, and it was kind of in the middle of nowhere, but despite these shortcomings, it's an awesome waterfall.
  • My entire family loved walking down the waterfall and then walking around behind it. The parking is for cars/trucks only, so no RVs or buses. There are also quite a few steps down to the waterfall then back up a cliff to return. It's well worth it, though. For those that can't go down the stairs there is an observation deck built to look down at the waterfall.
  • So my 6 year old nephew asked me who in the world would give this one star a total douche. The Falls are awesome. Hands down to the park. The douche with the one star probably complaining that the park close off access to the top of the falls so you can't get pictures looking over it which people have a tendency to fall off and die. That's a shame because that one less douche in this world
