We had a really nice boat trip at Missouri, just north of Helena. The landscape was beautiful and we saw Bald Eagles, Osprays, Bighorns, and deer. The captain told both facts and good stories. His assistant was good to find and show us the animals. The captain took plenty of time to turn the boat around so everyone could see.

This boat tour through the Gates of the Mountains was so peaceful and calm. The two hour trip was just right for relaxing. Jim, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable about flora and fauna, and his st...  more »

We enjoyed our tour of the Gates of the Mountains. It was so much more than just seeing the optical illusion of the gates opening and closing. We saw lots of wildlife including bald eagles. The histor...  more »

Great place to bring the family for a little tour boat ride that takes about 2 hours. You can either sit inside the boat or outside. There is ample seating and a bathroom onboard.

This is a two hour boating tour of the Gates of the Mountains Wilderness. It's a good sized boat with a canopy that takes you on a guided tour a few miles up the Missouri River. The captain told us about all of the history of the Native Americans and the experiences of Lewis and Clark. He wove in information about the wildlife and the geology. Perhaps the most historically significant event was the Mann Gulch Fire of 1949, wherein 13 smokejumpers died trying to run from a 70 mph inferno sweeping through the canyon. It is the most studied wildfire and dramatically changed the way they're fought. On our tour, we saw a bald eagle, quite a few osprey and a black bear. The guide mentioned they sometimes see mountain lions and goats. He also pointed out pictographs that were difficult to make out, but explained they were carbon dated at several thousand years old, I believe. It's a pretty nice and informational tour if you're in the Helena area.

We came here for the 10am boat ride on June 25 and the aluminum boat they had broke while we were on the water after 20 minutes and we had to return. We waited two hours for the wooden boat, and it also broke down before we could leave. Total waste of our morning because of terribly maintained equipment.

This is a stunning boat tour of the gates of the mountain wilderness area. You get to hear some history about the area (including Lewis and Clark's thoughts, stories about various fire fighters, etc), look at some pretty awesome cliff faces, and maybe catch a glimpse of some wildlife. Definitely worth the trip. The tour is accessible to all ages, no strenuous activity involved.
