Kilauea Iki Trail, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
(4.9/5 based on 950+ reviews on the web)
Leading through lush vegetation and its namesake crater, Kilauea Iki Trail offers you the chance to hike through one of Hawaii's most famous volcanic areas inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This 6.4 km (4 mi) round-trip trail will take you from the crater's rim and eventually lead you across the bottom of the formation. Be sure to keep an eye out for native birds and animals as you trek the rainforest. You'll find that the residual heat from subterranean lava causes water to evaporate and rise in clouds of steam from the crater floor. Keep in mind that the trail itself is considered moderately difficult and the 122 m (400 ft) descent down from the crater rim is quite steep and rocky, so be sure to wear comfortable footwear. • Parking at the Destruction Trail car park, we accessed the crater through a great trail that included great natural surrounds. Down the steps, we stopped in awe at the edge of the crater before headin...  more »
  • We ran today (November 4) the trail due to the not applicable in our eyes for the most part reviews here on TripAdvisor! I do not know whether the other evaluators on a different trail than we or are super trained or just show-off... The trail is quite difficult especially at the beginning (approx. 1 h) and you have to watch real, where is the next step. If you then safely brought relegation behind you have a pretty long stretch over lava rock CLIMBING. Again, this requires concentration of course because no one wants to fall determined on these sharp lava stones... Then at some point the trail becomes easier and also the rise is ok then. In fact all the time Alles...und but prefers the view remains the same... We have - needed just 2:40 h without big breaks -. We were supplied with water, jackets and some food. We also urgently needed the jackets because below a real storm blew. And we would have liked proper walking shoes... I want to talk this trail anyone, must be put into perspective but here just the reviews trivialising in our eyes!

  • The trail is certainly interesting, I recommend to do so after watching the video in the visitor center cinema showing the latest eruption occurred (if I remember correctly in the years 70) then when it is on the site and remember the images one understands the power of volcanoes Unfortunately we did during a rainy day ... wet as chicks
