Kilauea, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
(4.7/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Walk through lava tubes, explore a trail that leads to where a lava flow has incinerated everything in its path, and learn about Kilauea, the youngest and most active shield volcano in the state. Eruptions from the volcano that started in 1983 continue today. Located inside Hawaii Volcanos National Park, the crater has many steam vents and one massive one that glows in the dark, called the caldera. The best place to see the caldera lit up at night is from the observation deck of the museum, where you can also learn more about the volcano's history. Remember to dress warmly and bring a raincoat, as it tends to rain frequently near the volcano. Plan your visit early in your trip in case you need to come back another day due to poor visibility caused by the frequently foggy conditions. Also keep in mind that accessibility to certain areas is dependent on volcanic activity. Put Kilauea into our Hawaii Volcanoes National Park tour planner to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

  • The Caldera with its fountain of molten lava is simply mind blowing. It is also surrounded by steam and when we went it was raining lightly meaning there was a fine mist, making it even more otherworl...  more »
  • The Kilauea Vulkan is still active and in the crater bubbling and boiling lava. This can be seen from the parking lot at the Jaggar Museum super. At night, the whole spectacle is even more impressive because the lava red stains the rising clouds of smoke. You can even explode lava bubbles hear when it's quiet. On very impressive what the nature everything it has.

  • Worth walk to various locations up to touch the lava, feel the heat emanating and see what he's capable of. Highly recommended ... to remain open-mouthed.

  • hit or miss if it is a good view but nighttime I recommend seeing the glow is nifty. If you drive towards it at night from the west going east you can see the glow off and on from the road.
  • Bright red lava almost burns your eyes - looks like the earth's blood
  • It's so big!
  • An astonishing landscape
  • It is a very dangerous volcano
