Kīlauea, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

#3 of 11 in Things to do in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Walk through lava tubes, explore a trail that leads to where a lava flow has incinerated everything in its path, and learn about Kīlauea, the youngest and most active shield volcano in the state. Eruptions from the volcano that started in 1983 continue today. Located inside Hawaii Volcanos National Park, the crater has many steam vents and one massive one that glows in the dark, called the caldera. The best place to see the caldera lit up at night is from the observation deck of the museum, where you can also learn more about the volcano's history. Remember to dress warmly and bring a raincoat, as it tends to rain frequently near the volcano. Plan your visit early in your trip in case you need to come back another day due to poor visibility caused by the frequently foggy conditions. Also keep in mind that accessibility to certain areas is dependent on volcanic activity. • Beautiful and secretly also called scary to be so close to an active volcano. Wonderful image how destructive a volcano can be. During the day it is already beautiful, but also wait until the Sun is. Then you can see the volcano really glow!

  • Who knew you could get so close to an active and simmering volcano? If you go to the Big Island, put this on your list as a must-see. There's no other sight like it. You will see vegetation struggling...  more »

Where to stay in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park provides two drive-in campgrounds: Nāmakanipaio and Kulanaokuaiki. The former is on the main road near the park's entrance and offers full services. The latter sits more deeply in the park, has limited sites, and does not have drinking water. You can also stake your tent at one of the primitive campsites on the park's coastal hiking trails. The park does offer lodging in the Volcano House, which delivers sweeping vistas of the caldera at the top of Mount Kilauea. The aptly named town of Volcano at the park's main entrance has a bevy of accommodations, including cottages, inns, bed and breakfasts, and lodges. This is your best option for combining convenient access to the park with a comfortable place to lay your head.
