  • The living history tours are a must. My fiancé and I have visited a few historic homes and even visited one in Portland, Maine, the day before we visited the Mark Twain House and & Museum but the living tour was the most fun we have had visiting any home. Our tour guide was Lizzy the gossipy maid. She was friendly, fun, into her character, and extremely knowledgeable. We felt like we were brought back in time to when Samuel Clemens (a.k.a. Mark Twain) and his family lived there. At the end of the tour, Lizzy was kind enough to take photos with us in her costume. We enjoyed learning about the house and the people who lived there (the Clemens family and the house staff). After touring the house, we have been inspired to learn more about Samuel Clemens. We highly recommend doing a living history tour.
  • At first I wasn't completely convinced the museum/tour would be entertaining but I quickly realized that I was wrong. I found the museum and tour truly fascinating and would recommend it to anyone traveling to Hartford, CT. The tour was well worth the money and the restorations done on the property are fantastic. Only a couple of rooms in the house were roped off which allowed you to roam a bit in rooms (no touching of course!).
  • Good tour guide. Interesting stories. Visit the center to learn more about Samuel Clemens and his family. These fancy old houses are hard to maintain. The fees are justified since it is necessary to preserve the house. Conveniently next door to Harriet Beecher Stowe house.
  • Fantastic and a great cultural icon in Hartford. I LOVE when they did a free admission day for Hartford residents. Otherwise admission is $19, which seems a little too expensive, but I understand the high cost since this property has to be well preserved. They also do summer writing programs for kids, which is excellent. Keep up the good work.
  • Really neat house to see, and the tour definitely gave me a deeper appreciation for Hartford's history. Our guide was up beat, pleasant and had a bit of dark sense of humor which fit the atmosphere and life of Clemens perfectly. I would definitely recommend for an out of towner looking for something to do or a new resident like myself looking for a better understanding of the history of his or her new home.
