Hanover Tavern, Hanover
(4.4/5 based on 25+ reviews on the web)
Since 1990, The Hanover Tavern Foundation has overseen the operations, activities and preservation of this Historic landmark, one of the oldest surviving taverns in the United States.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Foundation’s mission is to preserve, interpret and utilize Hanover Tavern as an historic, educational, community and cultural resource center for the enjoyment of all.

John Shelton opened the first tavern at the permanent site of Hanover Courthouse about the 1750s. The current tavern’s earliest segment dates from about 1791. The tavern prospered with the establishment of the stage coach line until the railroad diverted business in the 1830s. An essential component of the social life of Hanover County, the taverns attracted many important people, including Patrick Henry, Lord Cornwallis, and George Washington, among others. Several enslaved African Americans from the tavern complex were accused of participation in both Gabriel’s Rebellion of 1800 and the Easter Plot of 1802. In 1953, the Barksdale Theater was established here.

  • The Hanover Tavern is a beautiful old piece of history. Beautiful architecture and charming reminder of how this country started.

  • Went to a show at the Barksdale Theater there. Historic venue, intimate stage, quality performance (we saw Brighton Beach Memoirs). Loved being able to go to the bar at intermission and bring out drinks into the theater (transferred to plastic cups, of course).
  • Went here for a wedding rehersal dinner. The staff was friendly like you'd expect in rural VA. Great food too.
  • Do not order the She Crab Soup,it has a bitter or sour flavor. The bread was terrible. The Meatloaf was so ,so,it was much better the last time we ate here. The service was extremely slow. They took the orders of several smaller tables before us and served them much, much faster than us.My meal was closer to the quality that I would get at a diner or a greasy spoon style restraunt.Dessert was the best part of the meal and it was free tonight.
  • My wife and I visited on 10/11/15. Had brunch. The meal was disappointing for several reasons. Food barely warm. Biscuit was burned. Appeared to have been made the day before and then put back in the oven.Sent lukewarm grits back to kitchen and it came back a soupy mess, again not hot. It was inedible. Sausage gravy was lukewarm without sausage. Cook apologized via the waiter but this was meaningless because the problem was not corrected. As consolation we were given a whopping 15% off. Bad day in the kitchen, bad day at the Tavern.
  • We had our wedding there last month and it was picture perfect from the ceremony on the lawn across the street at the historic Hanover court house, to the reception at the tavern. The staff at the Tavern are friendly and helpful. Izzy (the onsite coordinator and catering manager) made sure our wedding was perfect by staying on top of details to ensure we had the day of your dreams. The food at our reception was fantastic and everyone raved about the fried chicken and mac and cheese. The venue is historic of course and provided the perfect backdrop for pictures.
