Hanover Tavern, Hanover

(30 reviews on the web)
Historic Site Tourist Spot
Since 1990, The Hanover Tavern Foundation has overseen the operations, activities and preservation of this Historic landmark, one of the oldest surviving taverns in the United States.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Foundation’s mission is to preserve, interpret and utilize Hanover Tavern as an historic, educational, community and cultural resource center for the enjoyment of all.

John Shelton opened the first tavern at the permanent site of Hanover Courthouse about the 1750s. The current tavern’s earliest segment dates from about 1791. The tavern prospered with the establishment of the stage coach line until the railroad diverted business in the 1830s. An essential component of the social life of Hanover County, the taverns attracted many important people, including Patrick Henry, Lord Cornwallis, and George Washington, among others. Several enslaved African Americans from the tavern complex were accused of participation in both Gabriel’s Rebellion of 1800 and the Easter Plot of 1802. In 1953, the Barksdale Theater was established here.
Hanover Tavern is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Hanover Edition.

  • Lovely tavern. A glass of wine by the fire in the pub. Dinner (also by fireside) was exceptional. Great service, wonderful food, reasonably priced!  more »

  • Been multiple times over the years. I liked the crab dip... you can actually see lumps of crab in it. We usually just get some sandwiches for lunch. Dinner is great in candle light. The atmosphere is lovely. This place only loses a star because I have had my grandmother come and it was not overly handicapped accessible. Over wise this is a charming lunch spot.
  • This is a historic jewel, built back in 1740. Excellent food at reasonable prices. Today for Sunday Brunch, "Eggs St. Charles" 2 large (take one home or share) fillets, 2 eggs any style, hash browns or grits, spiced peaches, bread $11
  • History and a beer. What's not to like? The food was decent and the service was nice. They were a bit understaffed when I visited due to a large party. The staff worked hard to make it a nice visit.
  • Wonderful staff... Good food and a beautiful part of the history of Virginia!
  • Intimate, historic setting for a delicious meal! Word of caution: if you're dining on a night when there's a play, expect a slightly limited menu. Well-paired flavors and seasonal offerings mean you can try something new each time you visit.
