  • Passing through Alabama and decided to take the 2 hour detour to visit the shrine. Was surprised to find a strict dress code for entrance into the main church and lower church. That's not very accomodating to visitors of this Deep South facility. They did provide temporary clothes, but I can see how that could make some people uncomfortable. The grounds were beautiful. The churches were beautiful. The large nativity was so nice. It is a very tranquil place, a very peaceful place. I felt like we were walking on holy ground. Very much worth the detour!
  • Driving up to the Shrine is very tranquil. Once you park you realize you are walking on holy ground and feel the reverence. The Piazza is magnificent. The gift shop is closed Sunday so we didn't get to go inside. Someone in our group had been here before and said one cold spend hours there. We visited the Shroud of Turin Exhibit and the crypt before entering the main church. The nuns were saying the rosary on the other side of the alter and could not be seen, only heard. They sounded like angels. We had stayed in Cullman for a Cursillo Regional Encounter at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. (Which is beautiful). A friend from the conference attended a pilgrimage at the Shrine. We went for the afternoon. Blessings!
  • I absolutely loved it here. Don't try to rush it your visit. Schedule to spend the whole day. Make sure you are at the JP2 Eucharistic center at its scheduled tour time as that is the only time you can go in and you don't want to miss it.
  • You need to see this place. Really pretty.
  • Modeled after Francis' Church in Assisi, this Shrine is well worth a visit. There's the Church itself, an impressive Nativity display, a gift shop and conference center. Mother Angelica is buried in the lower level of the Church. This is an impressive place; there is no doubt.
