#6 of 14 in Beaches in Half Moon Bay
Poplar Beach is a beach located in and operated by the city of Half Moon Bay, California. It lies at the end of Poplar Street west of State Route 1. Located roughly a half mile south of Half Moon Bay State Beach, Poplar Beach allows horses and leashed dogs. It is close to a residential area, and there are no fireworks or beach fires allowed. Poplar Beach is open until sunset and is free to the public (though the nearest parking lot is metered).
The Coastal Trail links Poplar Beach to Half Moon Bay State Beach along the top of a bluff with scenic views of the Pacific Ocean and the Mavericks surfing location to the north. This hiking trail is also open to horses and dogs.

  • Very beautiful beach, but stick to the trail on the bluff above. The beach itself is covered in horse excrement (both fresh and buried in the sand) due to frequent horse tours. There are signs all...  more »

  • It is a good place for some time alone on the beach as not many people go down there but sometimes tough to find a parking spot. Quite safe place to leave the cars and just off the freeway with lifeguards patrol the beach is a plus. Some like to surf at the spot and if you are lucky, you may spot some wales.
  • Great beach in Half Moon Bay. Not nearly as crowded as State Beach. Easy parking, though people struggled to use the pay station so the line was long. Path down to the beach is pretty steep. It's not stairs but those with mobility issues would likely still struggle with the path as it's also quite rocky and a bit slippery. Watch out for horse poop! Beach is also dog friendly which made for fun entertainment. Port-a-potties in the parking lot.
  • Nice clean beach in half moon bay. Allows dogs on leash and most owners seem to obey that. The parking lot is a bit small but you can park a couple of blocks away. Getting to the beach after parking is a steep downhill. Be careful if you have many things.
  • This is a nice beach with what I consider to be a reasonably large parking lot, and many portable toilets. The only downside is that there's a rather steep slope to get down to the beach, which would make it less accessible for some people. Perhaps there were other access points, but I didn't find them.
  • Nice beach, close to the freeway but a little further out form the actual state beach. Lots of people still attend this beach but doesn't get as crowded as the state beach. Lots of dogs always go and is relatively clean anytime I go.
