Laniakea Beach, Haleiwa

Beach Nature / Park
Laniakea Beach may be one of Oahu's top surfing spots, but its star attraction remains the native "honu," the green sea turtles. The seaweed growing on the rocks scattered around this small beach is a source of turtle food, and you can often spot these creatures just basking in the sun or sticking their heads out of the waves. Although they don't seem to mind the incessant throngs of camera-toting tourists, state and federal laws protect these turtles, so remember that you cannot handle them. To learn more about their habits and peculiarities, approach one of the volunteers providing information and patrolling the beach. • Very popular beach. It's become known for its turtles. As we drove past we saw one on the beach, but didn't see any when we visited. Parking is a nightmare. Beach is crowded on a nice day. The swells are deceptively high, so watch yourself near the rocks. This also stirs up a lot of sand, so it's not great for snorkeling unless the water is quite calm. Some locals also told me it's not actually the best spot for seeing turtles.
  • I liked that the turtles were easy to spot. The beach wasn't as crowded as I had imagined it'd be. The drive there wasn't too bad either. The one thing I couldn't find at my particular location was any restroom facilities.
  • "Turtle" beach! Great place to see the green sea turtles on the north shore as they are out on the sand, almost daily sunbathing. Parking is limited and the road can be very busy, so be careful when crossing. We had better luck seeing the turtles in the afternoons.
  • The beach itself is rather small so not the best beach for sure but they often have turtles here so if you're interested in turtles, definitely worth a stop.
  • It's a small stretch of sand with shallow water and the best part was you can spot turtles from the shore butting their heads out. Kids loved it.
