Laniakea Beach, Haleiwa

4.3
#2 of 8 in Beaches in Haleiwa
Laniakea Beach may be one of Oahu's top surfing spots, but its star attraction remains the native "honu," the green sea turtles. The seaweed growing on the rocks scattered around this small beach is a source of turtle food, and you can often spot these creatures just basking in the sun or sticking their heads out of the waves. Although they don't seem to mind the incessant throngs of camera-toting tourists, state and federal laws protect these turtles, so remember that you cannot handle them. To learn more about their habits and peculiarities, approach one of the volunteers providing information and patrolling the beach. • Is whirled in a rental car, no cars in the afternoon. I think going into the wee hours of the morning, but to go on buses.

  • You will see Hawaiian green sea turtles here. Some people hop out of their cars, snap a few photos, and keep going. We spent about 90 minutes swimming and snorkeling here. Probably saw a dozen or so t...  more »

  • Its a beautiful beach to just walk around on. It is also a great beach to see Green Sea Turtles. Due to the lack of natural predators, the Green Sea Turtles swim to shore and rest in the sand in plain sight. I wouldnt suggest swimming in it unless you are going to be surfing. There seems to be a lot of rocks to swim in and big waves.
  • Nice place to stop by. Parking is on opposite bank from beach but cars are friendly to give a little tolerance despite slight jam build up. Saw 3 turtles when arrived on beach. A place where turtles frequent and beach has personnel to ensure safety distance from turtle as it is against law to come in contact with turtles and jail terms imminent. The beach has clear waters which snorkeling is good too!
  • Great place to see the honu and be able to ask questions and get answers from volunteers. Great view of waves and surfers. Carefully of rocks under the sand... easy to stub a toe. Also great to catch the sunset. Not good for swimming
  • What a great spot to see a green sea turtle up close other than while snorkeling. I have been here several times and it is always a pleasure. This is a favorite sun basking place for numerous turtles, but catching a glimpse of them is lucky... there are some great volunteers who keep the curious at a distance. They will also answer any questions....awesome folks. They even have a catalog of names and descriptions of each turtle. Parking is cumbersome and along a busy street so becareful....and you can swim here as well....just give the turtles at least 10ft of space!
  • It was an awesome experience! At this place I just can't take my eyes away for a minute watching the turtles on the beach. Beforehand, I was planning to visit the place for an hour and go somewhere else but the hour turned into a whole day. Believe me, I did not regret a single second of that day as I was mesmerized observing these magnificent creatures that I can only see in TV. The time was well worth spent and if I'm back, I would do it again.
