Guadalupe Mountains National Park

(4.2/5 based on 360+ reviews for 6 attractions)
Things to do: nature, trails
The eponymous range that fills Guadalupe Mountains National Park creates a magnificent break in the barrenness of the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert. The fossil reef from the Permian Era that gave rise to these mountains stands as one of the world's best examples of this type of geological feature. It pushed the park's highest point, Guadalupe Peak, to an elevation of 2,667 m (8,749 ft) and left the distinctive El Capitan with sheer cliffs roughly 300 m (1,000 ft) on three sides. The park's wilderness, which also includes canyons and sand dunes, offers prime hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, and stargazing. It's also home to mule deer, black-tailed rabbits, javelinas (fur-covered wild pigs), and mountain lions. Birders can view 300 or so bird species that either live here full-time or migrate through. Where to stay in Guadalupe Mountains National Park

If you want to stay in Guadalupe Mountains National Park, bring a tent or pull up an RV. The Guadalupe Peak and Pine Spring campgrounds offer camping with services, but you'll also find primitive campsites in the park's wilderness. Spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis, but they are usually available even during peak visitation times. The closest lodging lies about 56 km (35 mi) northeast of the park in the town of White's City. Options are limited here, though. You might have better luck finding something you like further up the road in Carlsbad, the main gateway to Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Most accommodations here are national chain hotels on Route 286. Carlsbad also offers plenty of restaurants.
