Clingmans Dome, Great Smoky Mountains National Park

At an elevation of 2,025 m (6,643 ft or 1.25 mi), Clingmans Dome is both the tallest mountain of the Great Smokies and the highest point along the Appalachian Trail. Park your car near the summit and embark on 0.8 km (0.5 mi) walk to the observation tower atop the mountain. Note that while the trail is short and paved, it is very steep. Benches along the way provide a place to rest and catch your breath. The tower's observation platform provides panoramic views of the surrounding area, and handy signs help you identify points of interest. Bring a jacket with you; cold temperatures and rain are common here. • Weekday. Afternoon. Cars parked all the way down the hill for a mile. Lucked out and got a spot in the lot. The walk to the structure was very steep and long. It was also so foggy you couldn't see any...  more »
  • The drive up to the top of the mountain isn't to bad. There are lots of places to pull over for some nice views. Once at the top there is a large parking lot and store. From there its a half mile hike...  more »
  • It is quite the 1/2 mike trek up the path, but worth it when you get to the top. The views are amazing! There's not enough parking for sure...we had to park way down the road and home back up.  more »

  • Went this Pass Labor Day weekend to Clingmans dome with my family from Atlanta Georgia. The drive too the peak of the mountain is about 1 hour and 30 minutes. But it was well worth the wait to get too the top of the mountain and see all the other Smoky mountains in the distance at the dome. Astonishing views like the Tennessee & North Carolina border line and so much more. Will definitely Be back in the future to do the Blue Ridge Parkway hike.
  • It's well worth the hike to the observation tower but you can still get a breath-taking view from the parking lot. Gorgeous sunsets and some nights you can even get a beautiful full moon view. But keep in mind that it will be about 20 degrees colder than the lower elevations. If you are planning on vising the Great Smoky Mountains, I highly recommend that you include Clingman's Dome into your trip.
  • Easily one of the beautiful views I've ever seen. At an elevation well over 6,000 feet, you can see for miles on a clear day. The drive up is a bit dangerous so be careful of traffic coming from the other direction. Once you reach the parking lot, there is an amazing view of the mountains that makes you feel like you're above the clouds. The walk to clingmans dome is a straight ascent up. Roughly 0.2 miles. There are benches along the way to rest. The temp up there drops about 5 degrees. A walkway takes you around and up to the dome. Enjoy the view!
  • “Beautiful” view that you can’t access if you have dogs. Apparently it’s “for their own safety,” but how can you tell me that a handicapped person is safe but a dog isn’t? I could pick my dog up and run away from a bear but if I was pushing a wheelchair with a person in it, there’s no way I’d be able to get away to safety. Total BS. I wasted so much time driving the whole way here from FLORIDA to be told that my dog isn’t allowed to walk outdoors. Nowhere online did it say that dogs were not allowed in the smoky mountains.
  • Absolutely an awesome site when you get to the top but you better be ready to walk! It's not such a simple walk either because you have to walk 13 to 14% grade. Not for everybody but you see all walks of life young old walking up just to see the site. Great view of the Smoky Mountains!
