Clingmans Dome, Great Smoky Mountains National Park
(4.8/5 based on 1,900+ reviews on the web)
At an elevation of 2,025 m (6,643 ft or 1.25 mi), Clingmans Dome is both the tallest mountain of the Great Smokies and the highest point along the Appalachian Trail. Park your car near the summit and embark on 0.8 km (0.5 mi) walk to the observation tower atop the mountain. Note that while the trail is short and paved, it is very steep. Benches along the way provide a place to rest and catch your breath. The tower's observation platform provides panoramic views of the surrounding area, and handy signs help you identify points of interest. Bring a jacket with you; cold temperatures and rain are common here. • It's easy to reach Clingmans Dome by car and walked up about 0.5 mile in slightly steep path. There are a variety of trees beside the walkway. The sky was great during the sunset.
  • Great view. You should do it at least once. Difficult walk if you are out of shape, but you can take breaks. Beautiful once you climb to the top.

  • I have been to Clingmans Dome many times. It was beautiful place to visit and see the surrounding area for miles in every direction. I made it my first stop on a 4 day vacation which started yesterday. Most of my vacation will be spent in the Great Smoky Mountains.
  • Unmatched views, provided the weather is right. Even if can't see very far, the balsam forest has a strange, rugged beauty. Be prepared for a VERY steep path and chilly wind.
  • Good exercise getting up there while breathing in that sweet mountain air. The view depends on the weather and a little luck. Park Rangers were very informative and friendly. Parking lot can overflow at times. Popular place.. Great to see so many different people of all ages walking up and down the path to/from the dome.
  • This is a must see. Beautiful views and cool to see all the mountains. Crowded. But nice to jump off on the walking trails. Would recommend! But be prepared, your legs will burn!
  • Clingmans Dome is a moderate hike on a paved concrete trail. It took us about 30 minutes to get up. The overlook is beautiful with a nice cool breeze, and you'll see stunning views of the entire Great Smoky Mountain range! We went in October and it was very crowded with tourists, so this is either a hugely popular attraction or else it was just the season. We had to wait a while to get a parking spot. But, in the end, it was worth it. Nice that we could take our stroller along.
