Categories: Mountains, Nature & Parks
Inspirock Rating:
4.8/5 based on 1,800+ reviews on the web
At an elevation of 2,025 m (6,643 ft or 1.25 mi), Clingmans Dome is both the tallest mountain of the Great Smokies and the highest point along the Appalachian Trail. Park your car near the summit and embark on 0.8 km (0.5 mi) walk to the observation tower atop the mountain. Note that while the trail is short and paved, it is very steep. Benches along the way provide a place to rest and catch your breath. The tower's observation platform provides panoramic views of the surrounding area, and handy signs help you identify points of interest. Bring a jacket with you; cold temperatures and rain are common here. • If it weren't for the fact that we had to wait in line over an hour for a parking spot, this rating would have been excellent. Once we found a place to park, we walked the very steep, but paved path t...  read more »

  • Good exercise getting up there while breathing in that sweet mountain air. The view depends on the weather and a little luck. Park Rangers were very informative and friendly. Parking lot can overflow at times. Popular place.. Great to see so many different people of all ages walking up and down the path to/from the dome.
  • This is a must see. Beautiful views and cool to see all the mountains. Crowded. But nice to jump off on the walking trails. Would recommend! But be prepared, your legs will burn!
  • On a clear day, the view is unbeatable. It's a ½ mile climb up a steep incline but still manageable for most. I'm 360 pounds and I made it. Even at my weight, the view was still totally worth it. This hike has become my inspiration to drop weight so it's even more enjoyable next time.
  • Beautiful views. Great lookout. Nice gift shop. It was a long walk to the top, but 100% worth it. Paved the entire way. Wheelchair accessible if you're determined to push or motorized.
  • Awesome fun!!! My whole family had a great time here! I love how they have random areas to rest while climbing to the top. It was a fantastic place to visit, and the view is amazing!!! Great place for photos!
