Mountain
At an elevation of 2,025 m (6,643 ft or 1.25 mi), Clingmans Dome is both the tallest mountain of the Great Smokies and the highest point along the Appalachian Trail. Park your car near the summit and embark on 0.8 km (0.5 mi) walk to the observation tower atop the mountain. Note that while the trail is short and paved, it is very steep. Benches along the way provide a place to rest and catch your breath. The tower's observation platform provides panoramic views of the surrounding area, and handy signs help you identify points of interest. Bring a jacket with you; cold temperatures and rain are common here. • Oh. My. God. This was NOTHING what I expected. We got there very early in the morning and it was packed still. It was AMAZING, probably the most amazing experience I've ever had in my life..it was my husband, and our 4 kids. The views are so out of this world. You're so high, you're literally above the clouds. The hike up was KILLER, and I think I almost died a few times, but we made it and it was so worth it. It was the most amazing view. I literally dream about going back. I look at the pictures and it still takes my breath away.
  • Clingmans Dome has been one of my favorite places to go since childhood. My parents took me, I took my boys, friends and nephew. It's a steep climb that seems long but it's only 1/2 mile, keep that in mind when sitting down on rocks and benches to catch your breath on the way up (ha!). People are friendly and the dome tower is an excellent reward to reaching your goal. The drive to the dome is beautiful, extremely beautiful scenery in every direction.
  • Well worth the steep hike up to Clingmans Dome. The view is awesome with a complete 360 view at the top. It is packed and you might have to park a mile back before you even get to the parking lot. Well worth the trip but there's plenty of other spots on the way to Clingmans Dome that offer the same view.
  • Amazing views! The parking lot is actually the best place to photograph the sunset but the walk up to the observation deck is also worth doing. It is a fairly long walk so plan accordingly and take breaks if needed due to slightly less oxygen at that altitude.
  • Clingmans is a must see. Have to be in pretty good shape to go up the half mile it's pretty steep. They were children stopped on side of path over right off of the walkway due to the elevation. This is not wheelchair accessible by the way. My mother had to stay in the car. Which is fine. Just warning you. Great views.
