  • A massive structure that a great place to bring the kids. The visitor center is very interesting and offers plenty of history of the surrounding areas.  more »

  • If you're a long distance hiker looking for a comfortable and free place to stay near this stretch of the Appalachian Trail, look no further. As far as amenities, it is in the highest echelon of AT shelters, and one can easily understand how it got its nickname of the Fontana Hilton. This is a spacious shelter with bunks, picnic tables, a water spigot, nearby bathrooms with showers, a graveled yard area, and a great view of the lake. Snacks and drinks are available during business hours at the nearby Fontana Dam visitor center. It was not very busy on a rainy weeknight in October, but I would expect it to be much busier in from March-May.
  • Nice if you like mice crawling around you, but pretty relaxing if you've been hiking for days. It even has a solar charging station for phones and things. Don't use the water pump here, it's nasty.
  • Great stop or zero day for AT hikers. Nice shelter. Clean water. Free shower. Solar recharge station.
  • Really great shelter along the Appalachian Trail, if you're going here PLEASE be respectful of your surroundings and the people.
  • It was an extraordinary experience seeing the damage from both sides and learning why it was built.

Where to stay in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park, choose between developed campgrounds where you can pitch your tent by your car and access restrooms and showers, or more primitive vehicle-accessed campgrounds. The park also offers accommodations in a permanent structure at LeConte Lodge, which is accessible via five different hiking trails. (There is no car access; you must hike in to use this lodge.) For a wider array of lodging options, stay in Gatlinburg. Serving primarily as a resort gateway to the park, the town offers various styles of accommodation, from national chain hotels to mountain lodges to small inns. Most places lie within 8 km (5 mi) of the park's entrance.
