Great Basin National Park

Trip Planner USA  /  Nevada  /  Great Basin National Park
(4.8/5 based on 260+ reviews for 4 attractions)
Things to do: nature, trails
Great Basin National Park is one of the U.S.'s more out-of-the-way national parks, but those who make the trip are rewarded with the striking contrast of snowcapped peaks rising from a high-altitude desert. Fragrant sagebrush covers the desert floor, 5,000-year-old bristlecone pines blanket the mountains' lower slopes, and limestone formations fill Lehman Caves, which sit at the base of 3,982 m (13,063 ft) Mt. Wheeler. Great Basin is one of the least-visited national parks, adding to the sense of isolation that the landscape already provides. This also means that visitors have the park's outstanding terrain for hiking, biking, skiing, angling, and climbing largely to themselves. Daylight provides the chance to spot bighorn sheep, elk, and American antelope, while nighttime offers prime stargazing beneath the desert sky. Where to stay

Visitors come to Great Basin National Park for isolation and a real wilderness experience, and the accommodation options reflect this. A series of developed campgrounds lie in the northern part of the park, and you can also pitch your tent in the wilderness. If you prefer lodging, the town of Baker on the northeastern border of the park offers a few basic motels and inns. The town of Ely, about 105 km (65 mi) from the park by road, provides numerous casino hotels and chain motels.
