  • This site deserves the effort required to access, however it is better to prepare a little before embarking on this little adventure. Only real difficulty, the 61 miles of unpaved road to go. The last few miles to reveal rather "full-bodied" but remain within the reach of an inexperienced off-road driver, subject to take your time and have a vehicle having a sufficient ground clearance. For information we realized this course with a Chevrolet Trail Blazer, SUV vehicle in the altogether mundane characteristics. Dry weather in any case no risk getting bogged down, it is always possible to stop to observe and then leave without problems. In view of the time constraints must be drive at night. Fortunately this is not incompatible with the State of the road, wide enough and little hilly except for the last few miles. The chances are minimal must however restrict them up on that with a vehicle and tyres in good condition, free of any unnecessary burden, with a tank filled to the brim. The existence of a Ranger Station a few miles from the finish is also reassuring. We must also be aware that most of the car rental companies prohibit the use on unpaved roads. In this case call on their help desk is probably not to advise. Little far away from the branch line localities Fredonia to Kanab are interesting starting points. The ideal is to be able to leave his luggage in reducing the vehicle, while allowing easy access to the spare wheel if it is housed inside the trunk. A small but real difficulty is to determine his departure time in order to benefit from the ideal lighting, in the hour following the end of the night, which requires to estimate the travel time and the time of sunrise. For the latter the solution is to use one of the many existing applications such as LunaSolCal for Android, which set to Kayenta gave me an exact schedule. More difficult is to estimate the travel time, since it depends on its degree of ease on this type of road. Regarding me 3 hours from the branch line is not excessive. In summary it would be a shame to dismiss any immediately this exceptional site and consider it as reserved for off-road drivers with a solid experience, this is not the case. Access restrictions it imposes can be accepted basically for the unique perspective it offers on the lighting of the cliffs by the first rays of the Sun. Although having not checked out it it is feared that this unusual aspect fades quickly during the day.

  • Preparation and abundant ground clearance vehicle required. The last 3 miles are no joke, either you have the right vehicle or you are hiking in and out. Start early with a full tank of gas from St Ge...  more »

  • Difficult to get to but worth the drive. Make sure you have a spare tire!
  • Visited in 2012 really wild, to be admired for its beauty, very challenging to reach it absolutely need a jeep 4 x 4 and bring a shovel and appropriate equipment to repair punctures that at 99.9% happens as it happened to me, to get there you have to travel a bumpy road and very challenging in some places.

Where to stay in Grand Canyon National Park

You'll find plenty of options if you want to stay inside Grand Canyon National Park. Most campgrounds and lodges sit around the South Rim area, and they tend to fill up quickly for summer visits, so book as far in advance as possible. The price range for lodge accommodations varies greatly, so there's something for nearly every budget. The less-visited North Rim features one lodge. For those who hike to the bottom of the canyon, dormitories and cabins are available at Phantom Ranch. If you can't secure a place in the park or find something there to your liking, the small village near the south entrance offers inns and economy motels. You’ll have the convenience of nearby restaurants if you stay there.
