4.9
#14 of 27 in Sightseeing in Grand Canyon National Park
Monument Landmark
Enjoy sweeping views of the Grand Canyon from Powell Point, dedicated to an early explorer who ventured along the Colorado River through the spectacular scenery. Shuttle buses will take you up to the point, which remains relatively less crowded than other spots in the park. Sunset and sunrise are particularly memorable, but no time of day disappoints with these vistas. Where to stay in Grand Canyon National Park

You'll find plenty of options if you want to stay inside Grand Canyon National Park. Most campgrounds and lodges sit around the South Rim area, and they tend to fill up quickly for summer visits, so book as far in advance as possible. The price range for lodge accommodations varies greatly, so there's something for nearly every budget. The less-visited North Rim features one lodge. For those who hike to the bottom of the canyon, dormitories and cabins are available at Phantom Ranch. If you can't secure a place in the park or find something there to your liking, the small village near the south entrance offers inns and economy motels. You’ll have the convenience of nearby restaurants if you stay there.

  • We made it to Powell Point just in time for sunset on our first night at the Canyon, and it ended up being our favorite spot. Lots of space to walk around.  more »
  • Catch the earliest shuttle to get there by sunrise - absolutely fabulous! If walking back take plenty of water and remember there are no facilities until you get back to the Bright Angel Trailhead.  more »
  • Another stopping point on the shuttle bus. If you are lucky to have someone familiar with the areas, you will hear the history behind it's name. As will all the stops, it offers great views of the can...  more »

  • This spot is accessible either by taking the shuttle or by hiking the rim trail. There is a small spot that juts out into the canyon after you take a few steps up. It can get quite windy quite fast on this point as the weather changes super quickly. Beautiful spot for photos, but it does get busy at the actual viewpoint.
  • This is my personal favorite spot along Hermits Rest. Though you can't see the river, the angles from this point are spectacular especially if you know right where to go.
  • This was our favorite place on the whole south rim. Not a lot of people, so we were able to spend a good amount of time enjoying the quiet and the view. If you don't have a whole lot of time, catch the bus to Powell Point!
  • Wow nice view. Fun to walk on near it.
  • Great view point...another one...of the canyon. Interesting memorial to Powell.
