Powell Point, Grand Canyon National Park

Enjoy sweeping views of the Grand Canyon from Powell Point, dedicated to an early explorer who ventured along the Colorado River through the spectacular scenery. Shuttle buses will take you up to the point, which remains relatively less crowded than other spots in the park. Sunset and sunrise are particularly memorable, but no time of day disappoints with these vistas. Powell Point is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Grand Canyon National Park Edition.

  • this is about 10 minutes on the western loop shuttle bus. The whole loop takes 90 minutes! Offers a different perspective plus a chance to view the abandoned mines from afar.  more »
  • This stop on the rim has an observation deck to climb up for a better view. It also has information about historical figures related to this spot. The views are amazing.  more »

  • Powell Point is one of the viewpoints along the Rim Trail and Hermit Rest Drive, located a few miles outside of the Grand Canyon Village. This is one of the best viewpoints, situated on narrow plateau that extends out of the South Rim, providing 270 degree canyon views. There are fantastic views of the North Rim as well as eastern and western sections of the Grand Canyon here. With such a wide span of views you can also position yourself somewhere at Powell Point where the sun is at your back, meaning that you always have optimal views and photographs no matter what time of day you visit. Interestingly, at this viewpoint there is also a elevated granite monument to John Wesley Powell that you can see. Powell is recognised for his his explorations of the Colorado river during the mid 19th century. There is a small car park area and shuttle bus pick-up/drop off point at Powell Point. You can also reach this viewpoint by way of the Rim Trail if you are planning hiking from the Grand Canyon Village. Plan on 10-15 minutes here if you are visiting several of the viewpoint stops in route to Hermit Rest.
  • Even better than mather point.. Love it!
  • Rainbows possess an unparalleled beauty just about anywhere they show up, but above the Grand Canyon makes for an extra illustrious scene. I almost left my perch at Powell Point as a threatening thunderstorm approached. I waited a few extra minutes, however, curious to see at least the beginning of this meeting between canyon and storm. As depicted in the accompanying photo below, I was rewarded for my wait, as a rainbow came to form out over the canyon’s expanse.
  • Great view point, very show walk and so worth it.
  • Too Amazing to miss!
