Lookout Studio, Grand Canyon National Park

4.6
#18 of 95 in Shopping in Arizona
Built on a rock ledge suspended over the Grand Canyon's south rim, Lookout Studio offers some of the best vantage points of the famous landmark. Listed on the National Register of Historic places, the 1914 studio is one of seven buildings in the canyon designed by famed architect Mary Colter, who strove to blend the structure with its natural surroundings using local stone and wood. Explore the building's historic interior, featuring various informative exhibits and a film, and then use the coin-operated telescopes on the outdoor terraces for up-close inspection of the natural spectacle around you. A paved trail nearby makes a great spot to watch for the California condor--North America's largest land bird and a rarity in the skies. The birds use the thermal updrafts of air to cruise along the cliffs. If you're looking for souvenirs, check out the on-site gift shop. • Studio in the local sale of the century, out of the outdoor is the lookout, side there is a small trail, can be down a layer of the observatory, from here can be photographed wide Canyon Valley scenery, it is difficult to call Studio Studios.

  • A great place to view the Canyon and take photographs from various angles. The colors are very vivid from this spot.  more »
  • The view is amazing as this gift shop sits on the rim of the canyon. It contains a variety of gifts from authentic Navajo jewellery and mats to Grand Canyon postcards. Worth a visit if you’re visiting...  more »

  • At least one time in your life go there. Beautiful place .
  • Beautiful view from the platform outside.
  • Beautiful building and can see scene of grand canyon.
  • Pretty neat little miniature castle type place that overlooked the canyon with some pretty amazing views. Was nice to just hang out there for a bit away from the hustle and bustle of the lodge. It had several layers of viewpoints that got increasingly further out over the canyon. Really nice.
  • Good photo spots where you can set the camera on the highest floor with your people on the lower floors.

Where to stay in Grand Canyon National Park

You'll find plenty of options if you want to stay inside Grand Canyon National Park. Most campgrounds and lodges sit around the South Rim area, and they tend to fill up quickly for summer visits, so book as far in advance as possible. The price range for lodge accommodations varies greatly, so there's something for nearly every budget. The less-visited North Rim features one lodge. For those who hike to the bottom of the canyon, dormitories and cabins are available at Phantom Ranch. If you can't secure a place in the park or find something there to your liking, the small village near the south entrance offers inns and economy motels. You’ll have the convenience of nearby restaurants if you stay there.
