Kolb Studio, Grand Canyon National Park

The Kolb Studio clings to the edge of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, in Grand Canyon Village, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona. The Grand Canyon Association operates an art gallery, bookstore and information inside the building. The bookstore's proceeds go to support the building, and the store features a tribute to the Kolbs’ photographs of mule riders at Grand Canyon. The start of the Bright Angel Trail is to the west of the Kolb Studio.HistoryIt was the home and photographic studio of pioneers Emery and Ellsworth Kolb. Begun in 1904, the building has evolved through two major additions and countless minor changes during its century of existence at Grand Canyon. The evolution and survival of Kolb Studio is also the story of its builders, Emery and Ellsworth Kolb.Restoration projectDuring 2013 and 2014, the Grand Canyon Association is in the process of restoring and rehabilitating this significant building of the Grand Canyon's 20th century history. Work includes addressing the structural degradation of Kolb Studio by: *a) rectifying drainage problems from public sidewalks and corresponding retaining walls, *b) stabilizing the concrete entranceway to assure safe continuing access to the facility *c) repairing and replacing exterior building features (e.g. log and shingle siding, structural beams, gutters, wooden porches) in order to assure long-term structural integrity of the building and *d) protecting restored exterior surfaces with paints, sealants and other coatings.

  • We loved taking the tour of the studio, which is only offered in the winter months. It was well worth the time, as our volunteer "guide" did a superb job of giving us an amazing tour of the private ar...  more »
  • Walk along the promenade will be opened as a Grand Canyon celebration of art exhibitions kolb studio milestone. To protect the Grand Canyon, and to record the passage of time many artists display their paintings at a glance. Painting with a variety of techniques through the Grand Canyon to see a different perspective too. In the Studio with various memorabilia viscosity booklet, board games, dolls, pens, magnets, etc. associated with tours to the Grand Canyon. If you would like to see every opportunity to come:)

  • It is more a store where you can stop for a moment before walking. The view is spectacular and the items from the store until they are differentiated.

  • During non-peak seasons, i.e., not summer, the park service offers a behind-the-scenes tour of the Kolb House. My family all enjoyed it as a highlight of our trip. Space is limited.
  • I highly recommend the free tour led by a Park Ranger. Make a reservation in advance; only 15 people can join the tour.
  • Amazing place. Great history. Friendly staff.
  • Artsy. Historic. Heroic. Inspiring.
  • So much fun and so pretty.

Where to stay in Grand Canyon National Park

You'll find plenty of options if you want to stay inside Grand Canyon National Park. Most campgrounds and lodges sit around the South Rim area, and they tend to fill up quickly for summer visits, so book as far in advance as possible. The price range for lodge accommodations varies greatly, so there's something for nearly every budget. The less-visited North Rim features one lodge. For those who hike to the bottom of the canyon, dormitories and cabins are available at Phantom Ranch. If you can't secure a place in the park or find something there to your liking, the small village near the south entrance offers inns and economy motels. You’ll have the convenience of nearby restaurants if you stay there.
