Grand Canyon South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park
(4.8/5 based on 17,000+ reviews on the web)
One of the grandest natural wonders in the world, Grand Canyon South Rim stretches 446 km (277 mi), reaching a width of 29 km (18 mi) and a depth of nearly 2 km (1.1 mi). Nearly 2 billion years old, the canyon walls expose nearly half of earth's lifespan, with layer after layer of rock cut by the Colorado River and its tributaries. For thousands of years this area was home to Native Americans, who built their settlements inside many of the canyon's caves. Today, the views offered by these ancient rocks attract visitors from around the world, who usually explore the South Rim's lookouts and Native American ruins. Hike along the Rim Trail to enjoy spectacular views of the canyon and surrounding desert landscape. Head back towards Grand Canyon Village to visit the Desert View Watchtower or the Buckey O’Neill Cabin, the longest continually standing structure on the South Rim. Most visitors do not hike. Of the nearly 5 million people who visit the Grand Canyon each year, 90% see it from the park's free shuttle buses or from their car at overlooks along the South Rim. • Admission / parking is free for military members and their families. It's a great place for romantic pics. You can walk a trail down to the bottom of the canyon or ride a mule, but it isn't that fun a...  more »
  • The Grand Canyon is amazing, lives up to the title of one of the 7 natural wonders. In particular the South Rim, which is the most beautiful. I was there in late November, a day before the Thanksgiving holiday, the Park was too full, yet had snow, but it was very cold, especially at night when the temperature must have dropped to around zero, so go prepared. Important Tip: If you drive, check the location where you parked, because by nightfall, the lighting in the parking lot and gets a little hard to find the car. Cost: $30.00 dollars per car, which allows access to the park for a week. Another important Tip: If you plan to go to the south rim, plan to stay at least a full day at the Park, to be able to see a considerable share of attractions, make a back coming out of Vegas, it's not worth it, you left the Park frustrated by not being able to see all points of observation. My advice, get out of Vegas a day early, make a stopover in Flagstaff, Tusayan or inside the Park and enjoy the next day in the Park, you will not regret it.
