Wildlife Area
Lion's Den Gorge Nature Preserve is a 73-acre public park located in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, running adjacent to Lake Michigan for 0.7 miles near the village of Grafton and city of Port Washington. It was purchased by the county in 2002 from a private property owner and borders a 44-acre United States Fish and Wildlife Service waterfowl production area. It features over 1.5 miles of gravel and boardwalk trails through white cedar and hardwood forests, wetlands, and Lion's Den Gorge, with some sections of trails offering views of Lake Michigan from atop the nearly 100 foot tall bluffs. Following the "Lion's Den Trail" from the main parking lot takes one all the way through the park, down through the gorge, and finally to the lakeshore. Fishing, hiking, birdwatching, and picnicking are popular activities in the park, and the park contains several diverse habitats for native wildflowers, trees, migratory birds, waterfowl, amphibians and mammals.Photo gallery

  • We come here often, a great hike to take the family and see the lake. It is an easier stroll, two main paths will take you to the lake and it makes one big loop. A must visit if you are in the area.  more »
  • I was missing my dog who passed in January. I would occasionally go to Lion's Den with her. I decided to go alone. I was able to see lots of and lots of dogs, the great lake, the wonderfully easy path...  more »
  • I love walking the beautiful, well kept trails of Lion's Den. Beautiful! Sometime it is very busy and there are a lot of people. If you go off on the less traveled paths you can find peace and connect...  more »

  • One of my favorite local hikes. The wheelchair accessible path is always well maintained. The walk up and down the stairs to the lake is 100 steps, we counted. Don't try those stairs in freezing temps though!
  • Nice variety of trails and walking paths. Saw lots of birds. Appeared someone was having a wedding there. Cool stairway down to the lake. Only downside is limited parking on just nice days.
  • I drive an hour to come here. I have yet to not find parking. Absolutely phenomenal variety of hiking from the bluffs, wooded area, beach and marsh. I'd like to mention it's free and also wheelchair accessible..important to me so I can go with my special needs son. Will be back as often as I can!
  • Beautiful scenery and hiking trails. Dogs welcome. Benches and picnic areas scattered throughout. Hiking trail leads to the beach.
  • Beautiful place to walk around. Pet friendly. Fun mix of on the lake paths, marshes, rivers and beach. Can be crowded.
