Mt. Washington Auto Road, Gorham

4.6
Scenic Walking Area · Scenic Drive
The 12.2 km (7.6 mi) Mt. Washington Auto Road takes you to the summit of the Northeast's highest peak. Take a guided tour, or drive on your own. If you choose the latter, pick up an audio CD from the ticket office to accompany your drive with information about the geography, history, and lore of the mountain. As you ascend, each turn reveals breathtaking views of the Presidential Range. Your ticket for the road also includes admission to the summit's Extreme Mount Washington experience at the observatory, where you can learn about the mountain's winter. Be aware that the auto road is narrow and winding and doesn’t have guardrails. Nervous drivers should opt for the tour. Use our Gorham trip planning website to add Mt. Washington Auto Road and other attractions to your Gorham vacation plans.

  • Keep the gears low both up and down the road. You'll do fine. Check summit weather before driving up to bring appropriate clothing. You're experience will differ greatly depending on how things are up there. We were very fortunate to drive up on a mid October day, and it was warm and sunny at the top with little wind and excellent visibility for probably 100 miles or more. UPDATE: Drove up for the second time this last weekend. What a different experience. This time there were broken clouds. It was one of the most beautiful and otherworldly feelings driving up this time around. The blue sky with the fast moving clouds sweeping across the road literally made it a little disorienting driving. The first time was perfectly clear, so you had the horizon and surrounding landscape as your reference point, but when you're just surrounded by clouds and sky, you really loose your reference on what's down and up and it feels a little like you're just floating through the sky. Keep your eyes on the road! Don't be distracted by the unbelievable sights around you.
  • We went to the Great Glen Trails Tubing and it was really great! No pun intended. Roger, the tubing attendant, was really nice and helpful. Super friendly guy. Highly recommend if you have kiddos and want to have fun without breaking the bank!
  • We did the snow coach trip today. First time for this. Been up the mountain both on foot and by car in the past. The coach only goes to 4200 feet ( not the summit). It was nice anyway. Quite a bit of snow and it was cold up where we stopped. We had my 92 year old dad and 4 other family members. You don't have to get out anywhere unless you want to. Our driver Hans was fantastic. Very informative and so pleasant. We we're lucky with clear sky's so we could see for miles.
  • Went on a motorcycle....never again...not for the faint of heart
  • Always a beautiful place regardless of season. Fun tubing setup which was the reason for our visit this time.
