#121 of 142 in Nature in Minnesota
Buffalo River State Park is a state park of Minnesota, United States, conserving a prairie bisected by the wooded banks of the Buffalo River. Together with the adjacent Bluestem Prairie Scientific and Natural Area owned by The Nature Conservancy, it protects one of the largest and highest-quality prairie remnants in Minnesota. With the closest swimming lake to the Fargo–Moorhead metropolitan area, however, it is most popular for swimming and picnicking. The 1068acre park is located just off U.S. Route 10 in Clay County, 4.5mi east of Glyndon and 14mi east of Moorhead.
Buffalo River State Park was established in 1937 and developed by the Works Progress Administration. Three buildings and three structures built in the National Park Service rustic style were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. The park was originally focused on providing outdoor recreation amenities like the swimming pool, since there were few other opportunities in the area. It was expanded beginning in the 1960s as the quality and rarity of the surrounding prairie were recognized.
The 6078acre Scientific and Natural Area (SNA) section is used for environmental education by local schools and regional colleges and universities. It is also a destination for viewing the spring courtship ritual of the greater prairie chicken.

  • We made a quick stop here to stretch our legs and walk around a bit. Trees in the park were starting to change and being from Arizona I like the colors.  more »
  • We needed an overnight campsite while traveling cross country. This one was very convenient to main interstates. And it was lovely! Large, treed sites. Very quiet. No traffic noise. Large, clean...  more »
  • Hiked the 2.5 mile hiking club on 4/20. The trail is fairly level which makes for an easy hike. The signage could be better. This trail is mostly in the prairie area of the park.  more »

  • Great place to spend some quiet time. Nice trails to hike. Quick and easy drive from the Fargo - Moorhead area.
  • Beautiful day to hike today. Flat land. Interesting ecosystems, nice distance from town but not too secluded. There's a swimming hole (man made) and nice hiking trails. I imagine cross country skiing is great here.
  • My animals and I love to go walking on the hiking trails there. It is our favorite picnic spot and the view is beautiful.
  • We just used it as a pit stop on a cross continent road trip. Currently the showers are under construction but looks like it will be a great place to camp in the future. We plan to come back and explore, beautiful area.
  • It’s a calm and peaceful place.it was almost flat lands with not much trees.there were some squirrels with not much of wildlife. The bridge over the buffalo river was attractive and had a beautiful view. There are some trials you could take to explore the park. The view point of the river from of the park is really beautiful.
