Specialty Museum Museum
The Bread and Puppet Theater is a politically radical puppet theater, active since the 1960s, currently based in Glover, Vermont. Its founder and director is Peter Schumann. The name Bread & Puppet is derived from the theater's practice of sharing its own fresh bread, served for free with aioli, with the audience of each performance as a means of creating community, and from its central principle that art should be as basic to life as bread. Some have heard echoes of the Roman phrase "bread and circuses" or the labor slogan "Bread and Roses" in the theater's name as well, though these are not often mentioned in Bread & Puppet's own explanations of its name. The Bread and Puppet Theater participates in parades including Fourth of July celebrations, notably in Cabot, Vermont, with many effigies including a satirical Uncle Sam on stilts.

  • This is an odd place, but if you find yourself on your way here you probably already know that! I love their art and passed by it accidentally while traveling in VT. It was very cool to visit their museum/store. There is no one in the store, it's a cash box with an honor system. It's a quick stop if you just want to poke through. Keep an eye out, it's easy to miss if you're going too fast on the two-lane road.
  • If you are in the area and are looking for something to do this is a wonderful place to visit, especially if they are performing. If not the museum is always open which is always fun.
  • A truly magical experience on a Sunday afternoon: the museum, live performances, the circus then a pageant and all for just a $10 donation. Political, artistic, inspiring and funny. Do not miss this place but check website for performance schedule.
