Bread and Puppet Theater, Glover

The Bread and Puppet Theater is a politically radical puppet theater, active since the 1960s, currently based in Glover, Vermont. Its founder and director is Peter Schumann. The name Bread & Puppet is derived from the theater's practice of sharing its own fresh bread, served for free with aioli, with the audience of each performance as a means of creating community, and from its central principle that art should be as basic to life as bread. Some have heard echoes of the Roman phrase "bread and circuses" or the labor slogan "Bread and Roses" in the theater's name as well, though these are not often mentioned in Bread & Puppet's own explanations of its name. The Bread and Puppet Theater participates in parades including Independence Day celebrations, notably in Cabot, Vermont, with many effigies including a satirical Uncle Sam on stilts.

  • I saw the Bread and Puppett when they came to Paris after the festival Nancy.en 1969? Then I have them begging in 2004 in Paris ou they put on a show and a workshop of giant puppets, or I have achieve a giant puppet of Raffarin, the Prime Minister at the time who has delighted the demonstrations then! This time, in a place dedicated to the counterculture "Wandering word" in Montreuil, I find in 2017, a new generation of young enthusiastic, whole dedicated to Agitprop theatre. It made me warm to the heart; they were beautiful and we were reliving the war to the Viet Nam and struggles up to Trump with songs, dances and drawings covered banners, a real success. The actors are full of enthusiasm and it spreads to the room.

  • Totally worth the drive...we went while it was closed, all to ourselves, definitely a creepy experience for all senses. Much larger and well kept than you might imagine.
  • One of the most incredible places I have ever been in my life, honestly. If you are an artist or a fan of public art, protests, or art intervention you MUST visit them. The museum is a beautiful, deep, tall barn of 4 stories that chronicles the puppet history of the troupe, dating back to the 60's. The puppets are beautiful and the people there have a special spirit and optimism that is worth encountering.
  • Strange and fantastic. The "opera" performed in the "Paper Maché Cathedral and Dirt Floor Theatre" was a bit rough, but I believe it was its first performance, and still fascinating. I look forward to some day catching one of their more polished shows.
  • I've been coming here ever since i was a little girl. It is always worth the drive. All are welcome. Come barefoot, come with good friends, come with a picnic, and come ready to watch amazing political art in action. Come hungry for great entertainment and of course, Bread!
  • Jaw-dropping wonderment. From the generous, eloquent and incredibly informative tour of the museum and the clay oven for bread, by Elka, who emphasized the importance and value of the bread-baking as much as the puppetry to the mind-blowing museum collection of what seemed like an infinite number of puppets, art, ....decades of dedicated creativity, artistry and activism,....weeks later i am still awe-struck by this experience
