Trail of the Cedars, Glacier National Park

4.4
#5 of 7 in Trails in Glacier National Park
Passing through a verdant forest of centuries-old hemlocks and red cedars, Trail of the Cedars is an easy loop hike that provides an insider's perspective on Glacier National Park. You'll get to walk along a raised boardwalk on the eastern side of the loop before reaching the highlight of the hike--a footbridge over the lower Avalanche Gorge. Take some time to soak up the views of glacial water cascading through the narrow gorge before heading on towards the lake and the campground. This wheelchair-accessible trail starts and ends on the Going-To-The-Sun Road, which is a very popular trailhead, so parking may be hard to find during the peak season. • A good short hike through a forest but pretty crowded. I would suggest to go early or late in the day. Most of the trail is on a boardwalk.  more »

Where to stay in Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park offers a wealth of accommodation options right inside the park. You can stake a tent in one of theĀ campgrounds or choose from a handful of rustic lodges and chalets. Rooms fill up quickly at these, so make reservations as far in advance as possible (up to a year ahead). A few inns, motels, and lodges sit around the St. Mary's Lakes by the park's northeast boundary, but staying in Whitefish on the western side is a better choice if you prefer to be in a Montana mountain town. Here you'll find homey inns and lodges, economy motels, and a wide range of restaurants. You'll find additional inns and motels as you drive east along Route 2 toward the park's entrance.
