Bowman Lake, Glacier National Park

Bowman Lake is in the northwestern portion of Glacier National Park in Montana. It is not commonly visited by most visitors to Glacier National Park, because it is located in one of the more remote areas of the park. It is more well-known among local residents, though, who use the small, uncrowded campground. The lake is accessed via a unpaved road from the small town of Polebridge. At, Bowman Lake is the third largest lake in the park, after Lake McDonald and Saint Mary Lake. The campground is located close to the shore, and the trees along the site provide privacy. Day users can enjoy a peaceful lunch at the picnic ground, and there are several hiking trails within the area. Fishing, canoeing, and kayaking are also popular on the lake which is of a glacially cold temperature. Motorized boats of 10 horsepower (7 kW) or less are allowed on the lake. Because of the long, bumpy road, recreational vehicles and truck/trailer combinations are not recommended.

  • After our stop in Polebridge at the mercantile (worth it for the pastries) we pushed up the road to Bowman lake. Absolutely stunning and worth the drive in every way.  more »
  • We had several days in GNP so took a day to explore Kintla and Bowman Lakes. Most of our time at Bowman. The road is rough but don't let that stop you. Take it slow and watch the blind corners. We did...  more »

  • This place is great. Not crowded and very tranquil.the round to get here is so-so but not terrible. Numa Lookout is challenging hike but well worth the effort. And there is Ranger Fire Spotting Scope at the end of the hike. If Ranger is there it is your lake day because they my show you inside and explain how fire spitting works and show you incredible ancient trech they use. Swimming in the lake at the beach by parking lot is very nice. Fishing is also great.
  • If you are going to Glacier you need to go to Bowman lake. Just keep in mind it fills up fast so get there early. If you want a truly amazing view of the lake, get there before sunrise.
  • The trails around this like are terrible - overgrown, not pretty, not close to the lake. Scenery elsewhere in GNP is much better than here. Roads to get here are terrible too. Just spend your time elsewhere.
  • Amazing place

Where to stay in Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park offers a wealth of accommodation options right inside the park. You can stake a tent in one of theĀ campgrounds or choose from a handful of rustic lodges and chalets. Rooms fill up quickly at these, so make reservations as far in advance as possible (up to a year ahead). A few inns, motels, and lodges sit around the St. Mary's Lakes by the park's northeast boundary, but staying in Whitefish on the western side is a better choice if you prefer to be in a Montana mountain town. Here you'll find homey inns and lodges, economy motels, and a wide range of restaurants. You'll find additional inns and motels as you drive east along Route 2 toward the park's entrance.
