Portage Glacier once covered the entire valley. When the glacier retreated, lush greenery and a clear lake were left behind. Head to the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center to learn about the natural and human history of the area. From here you can see the glacial lake and mountains. Reserve a spot on one of the boats that leaves from the visitor center to travel to the glacier's edge. Wear warm clothes, including gloves. Where to stay in Anchorage

Anchorage hotels increase room rates during the height of the tourist season, but you can visit the area economically any time of year by choosing a budget-friendly bed and breakfast or small inn. The city's downtown area contains the priciest rooms; most are offered by chain hotels. You can find less expensive rooms at a cluster of hotels located in Midtown, a largely commercial neighborhood with a good selection of restaurants and shops.
