  • I tried to go to this location today, but it didn't say online that the path the the Glacier was closed!!! To be fair, it is December and it was extremely windy, icy and snowing. However, the roads to...  more »
  • A must see, although very cold as you might expect. We visited this glacier with Alaska's Finest Tours.  more »
  • This allows you to hike pretty close to the glacier. A little under 2 miles. The scenery is just pretty. I would do this again during the summer!  more »

  • Byron Glacier is an absolutely spectacular place to spend a day. The first section of the trail is about 3/4 of a mile and consists of a flat, gravel path. This takes you to a small picnic table/bench area at the bottom of the valley. From here, the glacier can be seen year around and there's even a chance of getting into some ice caves! From there you can continue the hike into the valley. There are multiple ice caves further back that are accessable year round and make for a great day of exploring. However, to hike further back can be a bit more dangerous with the possibility of rock slides and avalanches, depending on conditions. I hike here about 5-6 times a year, as the area is always changing and new caves can become accessible as conditions change throughout the year. Be careful though, as the caves can also collapse because of this! Depending on how far you go, the hike can be easy and fun for all ages, as well as tough and for those who are a bit more experienced. It's all about how far you're willing to go and what you make of it. Have fun and be sure to sign your name into the log at the trailhead!
  • Just as beautiful in the winter. One of the bigger caves has a partially frozen creek. I drank from it and was delicious. The hike was a little rough but totally worth it. There‚Äôs ice climbing to be had.
  • My favorite glacier that we went to. It felt more natural than the other glaciers that we went to. The views are incredible in every direction and there is still snow even in August.

Where to stay in Anchorage

Anchorage hotels increase room rates during the height of the tourist season, but you can visit the area economically any time of year by choosing a budget-friendly bed and breakfast or small inn. The city's downtown area contains the priciest rooms; most are offered by chain hotels. You can find less expensive rooms at a cluster of hotels located in Midtown, a largely commercial neighborhood with a good selection of restaurants and shops.
