History Museum
Visit Shriver House Museum to learn the story of the Civil War's Battle of Gettysburg through the lives of the Shriver family. The home has been restored to nearly the same conditions in which it stood during the 1860 battle. You'll get an authentic look at how the battle hit the lives of the civilians of Gettysburg. Hettie Shriver, fearing for the safety of her young daughters, went to stay at the family's farm out of town. Guides in period clothing recount how Confederate soldiers quickly seized the empty house as a sharpshooter's nest. Notice the civil war bullets, some of which were still live when found in the attic in 1996. With our world travel planner, Gettysburg attractions like Shriver House Museum can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Excellent tour. Interesting to get some accounts from a family view of the war. Worth the time.
  • One of our favorite stops while visiting Gettysburg for the reenactment!! Our guide was extremely knowledgable and genuinely cared about preserving this great piece of history! She took us back in time to show us what is was like to be a civilian family during the civil war. This is a must see for adults and children while visiting the Gettysburg area!!!!
  • We loved the civilians' museum. The story of the Shriver family is touching and alive in this well restored civil war home. Tour guides tell stories and are even trying to restore the yard to a 1800's garden. Don't miss this on your trip to Gettysburg.
  • Went to the Shriver House on Friday 7/24/15. My 6 year old had such an enjoyable experience that she beg me to bring her back there the following day hours before we were set to leave Pennsylvania. The two period guides, Ms Marsha and Ms Laura , were very well informed and gave a great tour. Suitable for all ages and for the Civil War buff included as it gives a perspective on civilian life in the town before during and after the battle.
  • We visited with our three boys during the Christmas season. It opened such a wonderful discussion of daily life during the war. Beautiful museum
