#4 of 15 in Museums in Gettysburg
History Museum Historic Site
Visit Shriver House Museum to learn the story of the Civil War's Battle of Gettysburg through the lives of the Shriver family. The home has been restored to nearly the same conditions in which it stood during the 1860 battle. You'll get an authentic look at how the battle hit the lives of the civilians of Gettysburg. Hettie Shriver, fearing for the safety of her young daughters, went to stay at the family's farm out of town. Guides in period clothing recount how Confederate soldiers quickly seized the empty house as a sharpshooter's nest. Notice the civil war bullets, some of which were still live when found in the attic in 1996. With our world travel planner, Gettysburg attractions like Shriver House Museum can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

Where to stay in Gettysburg

Though Gettysburg offers plenty of lodging options to suit every visitor's budget, remember that you must reserve your room at least a few months ahead of time if you plan to attend the popular battle reenactments. Many inns in the heart of town offer both a sense of history and many modern amenities, including exercise facilities and both indoor and outdoor pools. You can also choose to stay at a comfortable hotel just northwest of the area's historical battlefield complex, located only minutes from downtown.

  • Been here several times, very nice little tour. Nicest house there.
  • Interesting little museum you enjoy a little tour of the shriver house and hear the shriver family story during the civil war. The house is original and has little altercations. The story and history does not have a happy ending however it is very interesting
