Categories: Scenic Drives, Tourist Spots, Outdoor Activities
Guanella Pass is a high mountain pass in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado, US.The pass is located in southwestern Clear Creek County, in the Front Range west of Denver and south of Georgetown. The pass was named for Byron Guanella in 1953. Guanella was a road supervisor and commissioner in Clear Creek County for nearly 50 years. The pass provides a route between Georgetown in the valley of Clear Creek to the north and Grant in the valley of Geneva Creek, a tributary of the North Fork South Platte River, to the south. The pass is traversed by the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway. The road normally provided a link between Interstate 70 to the north and U.S. Highway 285 to the south, but after Aug. 21, 2009 an unstable hillside closed the road to through access just below the Cabin Creek Campground This closure has since been cleared and the pass is fully available to traffic. As of 09/03/2011 the Georgetown access to the pass is open through the pass and the road, drainage, slide security and accident prevention measures are completed. The entire route from Georgetown to U.S. Highway 285 is paved. The road is no longer maintained in the winter and expect closure after the first heavy snow in the winter. There is a parking area at the closure gate on the Georgetown side of the pass to allow access to the pass by foot or snowmobile during the winter.Make Guanella Pass a centerpiece of your Georgetown vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Georgetown itinerary planner.

From start to finish, this was an excellent route to take. We stopped countless times to take in the view, breathe the fresh air and snap tons of photos. Just after reaching the top of the first set o... read more »

The drive up to the pass is spectacular, especially in late September, when the aspens have turned to gold. There are plenty of pulloffs to allow you to take pictures and great views of Mount Bierstad... read more »
Beautiful. Scenic. On top of a mountain. Stunning. Lots of different ecosystems. Marmots! Pikas! It's a paved road from Grant to Georgetown. Nice day trip destination from Denver.
Beautiful place to park your car and hike around. Good easy/low mileage hikes in the immediate area. Also access to Mt Bierstadt and Square Top Mountain A, as well as a long approach to Mt Evans if you've not traversing the sawtooth. Vault toilets, even in the winter, appear to be vault toilets.
Awesome trails, the parking gets a little crazy due to the 14er everyone is hiking. But if you do any of the other trails they are awesome and not crowded at all!
I have never done a 14er and was glad this was my first. The views are amazing and I am quite sure you will not be disappointed. If you are looking for a starter 14er this is it. My only complaint would be the clouds.
Great place to go for altitude training if you only have a couple of hours. But it is incredibly crowded with tourists and parking on weekends can be the worst.
