(4.8/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Guanella Pass is a high mountain pass in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado, US.The pass is located in southwestern Clear Creek County, in the Front Range west of Denver and south of Georgetown. The pass was named for Byron Guanella in 1953. Guanella was a road supervisor and commissioner in Clear Creek County for nearly 50 years. The pass provides a route between Georgetown in the valley of Clear Creek to the north and Grant in the valley of Geneva Creek, a tributary of the North Fork South Platte River, to the south. The pass is traversed by the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway. The road normally provided a link between Interstate 70 to the north and U.S. Highway 285 to the south, but after Aug. 21, 2009 an unstable hillside closed the road to through access just below the Cabin Creek Campground This closure has since been cleared and the pass is fully available to traffic. As of 09/03/2011 the Georgetown access to the pass is open through the pass and the road, drainage, slide security and accident prevention measures are completed. The entire route from Georgetown to U.S. Highway 285 is paved. The road is no longer maintained in the winter and expect closure after the first heavy snow in the winter. There is a parking area at the closure gate on the Georgetown side of the pass to allow access to the pass by foot or snowmobile during the winter.

  • Slow down a bit and drive the switch back laden road taking you to the summit of Guanella Pass. Take the loop hiking trail at the top, or enjoy one of the many trails that start right from the road.

  • Beautiful. Scenic. On top of a mountain. Stunning. Lots of different ecosystems. Marmots! Pikas! It's a paved road from Grant to Georgetown. Nice day trip destination from Denver.
  • This is the starting point of one of the more popular 14ers near Denver. If you like the outdoors and have an athletic side to you go climb this beautiful peak. Start early and dress warm.
  • Awesome trails, the parking gets a little crazy due to the 14er everyone is hiking. But if you do any of the other trails they are awesome and not crowded at all!
  • Beautiful place to park your car and hike around. Good easy/low mileage hikes in the immediate area. Also access to Mt Bierstadt and Square Top Mountain A, as well as a long approach to Mt Evans if you've not traversing the sawtooth. Vault toilets, even in the winter, appear to be vault toilets.
  • The absolute best place to hike and go tent camping! No fees. You can drive to the summit of Guanella Pass! Beautiful place 😀😀
