  • Excellent introduction to learning about sub-tropical savanna forest environment. Educational displays and a short video to present information to be observed on self guided hikes. Great place for children with a curiosity about nature. Friendly well informed employees help to make the best of your visi.
  • Friendly knowledgeable staff, good video and nice display. We love our migrating Sandhill Cranes (northern Illinois) and were interested to learn about this unique and endangered population of 100 SC individuals.
  • Wonderful experience. Called ahead to reserve two seats for a free driving tour of the area to view the MS Sandhill Cranes, approx 2 hour tour. Our guide Tom was very informative and friendly. Sighted 17 Cranes, two bald eagles, and other various birds. Binoculars were provided for free. Highly recommend, but call ahead for scheduled tours!
  • The sight is really beautiful and gives one an appreciation of the extremely loss of our coastline. I learned how plastic is detrimental to the sea life as to humans. The plastic that is used in everything humans use is bad. It takes thousands of years to decompose. The fish eat the plastic(chemicals) we eat the fish(chemicals) and we are getting sick because of our disrespect for mother nature.
  • Mississippi Sandhill Crane NWR protects some of the last remaining wet pine savanna, habitat for the critically endangered Mississippi subspecies of sandhill crane. It's just a half mile of I-10 in Gautier, so a nice spot for a break from driving. I was driving across Mississippi towards Florida and stopped here for a break to stretch my legs. The visitor center was closed on Monday, so I just hiked the CL Dees Nature Trail. The 3/4 mile trail runs through a wet pine savanna and along Bayou Castille. Signs along the trail provide information about the savanna habitat. Didn't see any cranes, but there were pitcher plants and wildflowers along the trail. Great place to learn about cranes and the habitat they depend on to survive as well as a good spot for a break from driving on the interstate without going far out of the way.
