  • Wife and I came here first thing a few years ago. It was about 10 years since we had been to the beach due to school/work. After driving for 10 hours we walked to the beach and sat in some beach chairs that are apparently made of gold. We sat down in them for all of about 3 minutes before some douche came running over and demanded we pay the $30/day to rent them. We explained we were only going to be there a few more minutes and he promptly said "NO, you need to get up now unless you are paying". I guess he had a premonition of a hundred families that were going to drop out of the sky and rent the other 30 umbrellas and chairs that were sitting empty. Now that my wife and I live on the island we tell ANYONE that we can to just stop by Academy and buy your own set of umbrella and chairs for $20 that you can actually keep. Even during the summers when we have guests down we don't take them here.
  • Awesome place for hook fishing. I've now learned it's best to wear sports cleats with metal spikes when walking over the rocky man-made wave wall. Bait can be easily caught with a cast net on shore. Can walk a mile in water on the left side of wall before it gets really deep, good for using the cast net as well there
  • Not much here apart from signs describing what WAS here, which is OK by me. Cool watching the big ships on their way through to or from Houston. East End beach is not far away. I guess there is good fishing around here
  • The wife and I live going here off season. It's peaceful, great views, far from the mainstream Galveston and its free. During the summer season you have to pay to park anywhere near the beach. Free parking is about 1/2 mile from the beach. Off season is very quiet. There are a few people fishing but that's about it. We like to walk along the beach, take pictures and hunt for sea shells. There are a few sand bars around that make great sitting and/or picnic spots. During the summer season they have umbrellas along the beach, it's understandably much more crowded but it's still better than along the seawall if you want to spend the day on the beach. One warning, it's ALWAYS windy here. That means the dry sand areas will be picking up sand and depositing it all over your body and if you don't tie down your light items you'll be chasing them down the beach all day. Come prepared.
  • Drove right up to the waters edge. It's quiet and out of the way. Very relaxing.

Where to stay in Galveston

When choosing accommodations in Galveston, remember that the closer you stay to the water, the more you are likely to pay. Top prices usually get you a spacious room packed with modern amenities plus sweeping views of the Gulf of Mexico. You can save a bundle by staying away from the city's popular beachfront. If your home away from home is on wheels, consider one of Galveston's RV parks and resorts.
