  • This place is pretty cool and FREE. I was trying to find a spot in the area to crash out in my tent and came across this. Unfortunately the address right now is for the corporate offices, & I have suggested some edits for the correct pin drop location. Hopefully that will get updated and people be able to find it easier. I give it 4 stars based off how hard to find it might be. The headquarters should at least have some road visible signs or a map pointing to the correct location for the recreation area. It does not. However, if you go further forward or behind you depending where you're coming from you will either reach for Fritch Fortress Highway or Fritch Dr. Those roads will take you all the way up to the actual Recreation Area. Fortress highway will actually connect with El Paso Dr. at the little turnaround circle where the camping in restrooms are at. The location is pretty nice overlooking a lake. All the camping spots first come first serve. The area has very nice clean modern showers, with hot water. They are free! Camping spots have a ground pit with grill, and a covered picnic table. Water pump is in front of restrooms. Not bad to camp or sleep in your vehicle in a quiet spot at no charge. I'm sure it's not busy because it's hard to find right now. I wish I had taken pictures, but I was rushing to hit the road.
  • Free Camping @ its best. My camping spot was up a bluff from the lake, as were the others. Not many beaches at this lake. Strong winds at times. The showers are new and private: bath with toilet, shower, bench, sink, which can be locked. Absolutely wonderful spray. Made driving six hours that day worth it.
  • Beautiful, free recreation area. Fritch Fortress is a great campsite in terms of camping space, accessibility, and views. Only problem was the brand-new showers in had all backed up. However, I'm sure maintenance has taken care of that by now.
  • Love this place. Like a second home.
  • Since the lake has come up many people have been very active camping and boating
