  • I was last at the Whale Museum 12 years ago. I enjoyed it then, but the updates since then are fantastic. My friend and I stayed about 2 1/2 hours. If we had enough time we would have stayed longer. I...  more »
  • If you are on the island pass through there especially before going to Safari because I learned a little more about the whales. However the museum piece in conservation and could also be more interactive for the kids.

  • This is such a fantastic Museum and a great way to support local conservation. They have lots of whale and other marine mammal skeletons on display, interactive exhibits, and extremely knowledgeable docents who are able to bring the subject matter to life. It makes me very happy that the primary purpose of this Museum is to provide a steady stream of funding for local efforts to protect whales and other marine mammals in the San Juan Islands. A visit to Friday Harbor definitely isn't complete without a tour through The Whale Museum
  • Loved learning about whales. On the day we visited, there was a elementary school tour taking place which we got to sit in and hear the presentation. We were able to see a demonstration of the call of the whales. What a humbling experience to know that beautiful and intelligent creatures roam the oceans.
  • A great place to bring the family and learn all about marine mammals in the Salish Sea. Their educational displays are wonderful, with life size replicas, fully articulated skeletons, videos, acoustic recordings, hands on artifacts like real teeth and baleen and much more, all packed with interesting facts. You will have fun and learn a lot!
  • Pretty much a one-room museum, so perhaps a little pricey for that. But they do have a lot on stuff packed into that room. It was interesting to see.
  • Really cool whale facts, awesome gift shop. It's small, probably won't spend more than an hour there.

Where to stay in Friday Harbor

As a popular summer escape for residents of the Seattle area and tourists from further afield, Friday Harbor does not lack for a selection of accommodation. Most places sit in the historical downtown area. Here you'll find charming inns and bed and breakfasts, upmarket suites and spas, and more basic motels. A couple of guesthouses sit farther away from downtown. These offer more privacy, but you'll probably want to have a car if you choose stay at one. If you plan to arrive in summer, book your stay as far ahead as possible.
