Lime Kiln Point State Park, Friday Harbor

4.8
#1 of 13 in Parks in San Juan Islands
Lime Kiln Point State Park is a 36-acre Washington state park on the western shore of San Juan Island in the San Juan archipelago. The park is considered one of the best places in the world to view wild orcas from a land-based facility. Due to the unique bathymetric properties of the site, visitors on the shore can be within 20 feet of whales jumping out of the water (breaching and spyhopping). The park was the site of lime kilns beginning in 1860, and one kiln has been restored as a public exhibit.Activities and amenitiesThe park provides opportunities for picnicking, hiking, beachcombing, orca watching, and tours of the still operational Lime Kiln Light. An interpretive center has displays and activities about orcas and the area's former lime kiln industry. The park is supported in part by the Friends of Lime Kiln. Volunteers and marine naturalists are often onsite to assist and educate visitors.

  • Such an incredible place to hike and take in the gorgeous views. Were able to see orcas just off the coast and the view of the light house was picture perfect!  more »
  • This spot was one of our favorite stops along the Scenic Byway! Great picture opps. We visited in the off season, but we'd definitely return to take in whale watching and visit the Interpretive Center...  more »
  • Very nice state park: well maintained, lots of parking and easy access to the coast line. Scenes of the rugged coast line with the lighthouse are spectacular.  more »

  • Great view.. wonderful place to hang out.. perfect place for whale watching.. binocular recommend.. windy place
  • Waiting to see whales. We were told that there were couple of spots around Lime Kiln Point State Park that were good look out for whales. This was on the Westside Road area, probably two or three miles down from the actual park. On the day we showed, the whales were somewhere else. We did see a happy seal playing in the blue water.
  • Gorgeous view point even if you don't get to see the Orcas. We got lucky however and got to see them pretty close up. Would highly recommend if you want to see an Orca, don't want to pay for a whale watching tour, and have a few hours to spare and sit by the seashore.
  • Beautiful park with wonderful walking trails and views. Only negative is that you have to have a Discovery Pass for parking. The Passes are sold here.
  • Very peaceful spot with a great chance to spot some whales. There are spottings almost everyday. Just got to be patient. Go to the Friday Harbor visitor center to learn more about how and why whales get there.

Where to stay in Friday Harbor

As a popular summer escape for residents of the Seattle area and tourists from further afield, Friday Harbor does not lack for a selection of accommodation. Most places sit in the historical downtown area. Here you'll find charming inns and bed and breakfasts, upmarket suites and spas, and more basic motels. A couple of guesthouses sit farther away from downtown. These offer more privacy, but you'll probably want to have a carĀ if you choose stay at one. If you plan to arrive in summer, book your stay as far ahead as possible.
