#1 of 15 in Parks in San Juan Islands
Lime Kiln Point State Park is a 36-acre Washington state park on the western shore of San Juan Island in the San Juan archipelago. The park is considered one of the best places in the world to view wild orcas from a land-based facility. Due to the unique bathymetric properties of the site, visitors on the shore can be within 20 feet of whales jumping out of the water (breaching and spyhopping). The park was the site of lime kilns beginning in 1860, and one kiln has been restored as a public exhibit.Activities and amenitiesThe park provides opportunities for picnicking, hiking, beachcombing, orca watching, and tours of the still operational Lime Kiln Light. An interpretive center has displays and activities about orcas and the area's former lime kiln industry. The park is supported in part by the Friends of Lime Kiln. Volunteers and marine naturalists are often onsite to assist and educate visitors.

  • I visited San Juan for only a week, but this place is already forever in my heart. My favorite part about the Pacific Northwest is the Pacific Madrona trees. This park has some really lovely ones. The reddish-orange bark is exquisite, especially at sunset!
  • this is one of the best state parks out there for whale watching. easy parking, a spot designated for whale watching, and an information center. well, we didn't really see any whales while at the park, but there were some nice guides in the information center about the population of Friday Harbor. which is about 2,600.
  • This is a fabulous park to visit in January. It's quiet with not very many people. Was able to talk to a naturalist on-site who was very friendly and answered all of my questions.
  • Great place to see Orcas during the summer. Take a picnic basket and enjoy the beautiful views
  • Great place for light hiking. A good place to whale & bird watch. A pod of orcas swam by when we were at the light house. The light house was closed, but it was a holiday.
