Ardenwood Historic Farm, Fremont

#5 of 14 in Things to do in Fremont
George Washington Patterson came west in 1849 to seek his fortune in the goldfields of California. Instead he "struck gold" in the fertile farm fields of southern Alameda County.

This farm was originally owned by the George & Clara Patterson family from the 1850s. It was turned over to the City of Fremont in 1978, and the East Bay Regional Park District has operated the property as a fully functioning, turn-of-the-last-century farm since 1985. A visit here is a journey back to the time of the 1850s Patterson Ranch--a prosperous, 19th-century country estate with a beautiful Victorian mansion and elaborate Victorian Gardens.

The farm still grows the same kind of produce that was grown in the region in the last 100 years, utilizing agricultural practices from the 1870s to the present, demonstrating the transition from horse-powered to horsepower farming. The interpretive staff and volunteers, attired in Victorian clothing, guide guests through the Victorian house, demonstrate farm chores, and explain what life was like in the early 1900s. From December to mid-February monarch butterflies overwinter here.

  • Fun place for toddlers and pre-k kids. Flat, stroller-friendly roads with space for kids to run around and explore. There were many lamb and goats (with horns cut-off?) in the petting zoo area. It was apparently mating season for the peacocks so we heard lots of noise and saw one male peacock opening his fan. It was an amazing experience for adults as well as kids 😉 This farm is conveniently located right off of 84. It closes at 4PM. Entrance fee is $3/person.
  • Wonderful working farm with beautiful farm house, fields, barns, etc. Great for kids with animal feedings at 3PM. They have chickens, sheep, goats, cows, horses, and bunnies and have some really great events. This is an awesome place in Autumn. Make this place a family tradition for you and your kids. We've built some really great memories here. There is an entrance fee, but if you get the East Bay Regional Park annual pass it's free (except when they have special events). Fantastic place for a wedding, by the way.
  • Great, open space for kids and families. Can bring a little picnic or get snacks at the farm house cafe (they even sell coffee and wine). Sheep, goats, peacocks, chickens, pigs, some beautiful flower gardens. A little area to play Cornhole.
  • I spent half day here with family on Halloween day. We loved the place. My daughter picked the pumpkin she wanted from huge pumpkin farm. A small train connects between park. You can see all healthy farm animals and get a chance to feed those animals. They demonstrate how farmers grow vegetables and their history. I give more stars to this place ******
  • We came here on Christmas Eve at around 3pm as they were about to feed animals. Tickets are super cheap at $3 per person! We walked around the property and had fun feeding the chickens, goats and sheep. At the end of the feeding, the staff gave away pop corn to make at home and gave us useful tips for cooking it. We cooked it the same day when we went back and it was yummy! I bet this place is much more fun during summer time and when they have the pumpkin patch! Looking forward to being back in a different season :)
