The Rising Sun Tavern, Fredericksburg

(180+ reviews on the web)
History Museum
George Washington’s youngest brother, Charles, built this landmark in 1760 as his private residence. The building became a tavern in 1792.

Today, the “tavern wenches” and male “indentured servants” entertain visitors as though they have just stepped off their coaches into colonial times.

  • We learned a lot from the tour, which surprised us since we've visited a number of early American historical sites. Go to this one!  more »

  • Great tour of the Tavern by Gillian
  • Fun historical tour with lots of humor
  • Continuing on the occasional trips to historic sites in the Washington DC area and not too far beyond, we drove to Frederick and went to the Rising Sun Tavern. What an interesting site. The tour was great and our guide really brought to life what it was like to live in the 18th century and, even more interestingly, what it was like to travel in the 18th century. I am really glad that I live in an age where there are more amenities when you travel. Nonetheless, I loved stepping back in time and imagining what it would have been like to be living at the time of the American Revolution. Definitely one of the more interesting historical sites that I have been to. I recommend going! The guided tour was fantastic.
