Buffalo Trace Distillery, Frankfort

(4.7/5 based on 1,300+ reviews on the web)
According to Guinness Book of World Records, Buffalo Trace Distillery represents the oldest operating bourbon distillery. In fact, it is a National Historic Landmark for operating before, during, and after Prohibition. Its origins date back to 1773, and it has a 1792 building still standing on the grounds. The site produces award-winning bourbons, as well as several rye whiskey labels and vodka. You can reserve a guided tour that focuses on the history of the site or take a behind-the-scenes tour. But you don't need reservations for the basic tour which takes you through the barrel-filled warehouses and the production line where bourbons are packed and sealed by hand. All tours are complementary. Ghost hunters believe that supernatural spirits can be found at the site; hear about it during the free ghost tour--with tasting included. • Love this place. So much history. Everything is so old and there's still so much hands-on labor and love that goes into each barrel. After you take a tour here you really won't drink bourbon the same ...  more »
  • Took the 9:00 am tour and was very impressed. We thought it was the best tour (we went on 7) and they aren't even on the official Bourbon Trail. Coy was great and there wasn't any question he couldn't...  more »

  • Went to a buddy's wedding here. Absolutely beautiful. The newlyweds set us guests up an abbreviated tour. I'd like to go back for the full tour. Do you like bourbon? Local history presented in an entertaining fashion? Then it's a no brainier. Enjoy.
  • Wonderful experience! Our group had a great time and learned so much. Many thanks to Jeff for the excellent tour. We loved having you for our tour guide and "bartender". You represented Buffalo Trace very well. They should give you a raise!
  • We had the most exceptional good fortune to be guided by Freddy and Leslee. Freddy is a third generation Buffalo Trace employee, and his humanity and wisdom were only surpassed by his sense of humor. What a generous soul! The distillery is gorgeous, fully authentic, and the only disappointment is the limited stock of bourbons for sale. Just Eagle Rare and Buffalo Trace - which are really their mid-level whiskeys. Still, the overall experience was the most heart-warming and informative of all our distillery tours. This is a must visit for all interested in Bourbon.
  • Amazing historic bourbon distillery. The intoxicating smell of the bourbon making process fills the air as you see historic rick houses and beautiful grounds. A must visit for any whiskey enthusiast and tourist alike.
  • Awesome tours - we did the bourbon barrel and hard hat tours and they were a blast. We had some very specific requests for things we wanted to see, and Matt the visitor center manager was very helpful. I learned a lot about the history and the distilling process.
