Buffalo Trace Distillery, Frankfort

4.7
According to Guinness Book of World Records, Buffalo Trace Distillery represents the oldest operating bourbon distillery. In fact, it is a National Historic Landmark for operating before, during, and after Prohibition. Its origins date back to 1773, and it has a 1792 building still standing on the grounds. The site produces award-winning bourbons, as well as several rye whiskey labels and vodka. You can reserve a guided tour that focuses on the history of the site or take a behind-the-scenes tour. But you don't need reservations for the basic tour which takes you through the barrel-filled warehouses and the production line where bourbons are packed and sealed by hand. All tours are complementary. Ghost hunters believe that supernatural spirits can be found at the site; hear about it during the free ghost tour--with tasting included. • Fantastic tour of the historic facility with ample parking and access to the main roads. I'd recommend bringing a few extra dollars because their gift shop is full of things that you need: glasses, mugs, decanters, and actual distillery products. Be aware that there are per capita limits for the purchases of bourbons. Enjoy your tour! Cheers!
  • If you're a bourbon fan, let alone a Buffalo Trace fan, you need to spend some time here. Excellent tour of a real, working bourbon distillery. Would go back to take another tour in a heartbeat. I highly recommend the "Bourbon Barrel" and "Hardhat" tours...see how bourbon is made from grain delivery to bottling. Hard to find bottles are for sale in the gift shop, but make sure you arrive and buy early, as your favourites may have sold out. This was the highlight of my trip to Kentucky.
  • A wonderful experience! Our guide was personable, funny, and read his crowd well. The tour we took was interesting, engaging, and immersive. You could smell the different types of alcohol in the air, and the historical quality of the distillery was abundant. To make it even better, I was shocked to learn that the tour and tasting is free! They also provide a 20% discount on non-alcoholic merchandise.
  • Awesome tour with free tastings at the end. Our tour guide, Freddie, was very charismatic and enthusiastic. This tour gave me such a new appreciation for bourbon and the distilling process. My husband looks for Buffalo Trace wherever we go now. Just go. Go right now. You will not regret it!
  • This simply has to be the premier distillery of the south. I love bourbon and the history and manufacturing of it is fascinating to me. The fact that this is a historic landmark only adds to the magnitude of this facility. The grounds are meticulously kept and the grandeur of some of the older buildings are kept intact. The tours are always free (as are all the tastings!) and the guides are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The Christmas lighting is fantastic if you happen to be there at that time of the year!! I have been at many of the distilleries throughout the south and Buffalo Trace is in a class all by itself!! I highly recommend it to all the bourbon lovers and history buffs alike!!
