Buffalo Trace Distillery, Frankfort

4.7
#1 of 20 in Breweries in Kentucky
According to Guinness Book of World Records, Buffalo Trace Distillery represents the oldest operating bourbon distillery. In fact, it is a National Historic Landmark for operating before, during, and after Prohibition. Its origins date back to 1773, and it has a 1792 building still standing on the grounds. The site produces award-winning bourbons, as well as several rye whiskey labels and vodka. You can reserve a guided tour that focuses on the history of the site or take a behind-the-scenes tour. But you don't need reservations for the basic tour which takes you through the barrel-filled warehouses and the production line where bourbons are packed and sealed by hand. All tours are complementary. Ghost hunters believe that supernatural spirits can be found at the site; hear about it during the free ghost tour--with tasting included. • Took the hourly free tour and it was amazing! The tour guide was enthusiastic and really knew his history. I would recommend doing the tours, I wish we had signed up for the 'hard hat" tour but we didn't know before we arrived. So definitely check out the various tours. The gift shop is decent, it has a lot of cool little nick knacks...I would recommend making sure you have space to bring stuff home.
  • Well worth a visit. Free hourly tours with great guides and seriously interesting information about the history of bourbon in Kentucky. Generous tastings after the tour. Large gift shop with wide assortment of products. You need 2 to 3 hours for the tour and visit. Plenty of on site parking. Wear comfortable shoes for walking the grounds.
  • Very cool place to tour. We did two of them and thoroughly enjoyed them. The guides kept it entertaining, which makes it much better. There's much history at this place too.
  • Fantastic tour guide and absolutely beautiful wedding venue. The history of this place is incredible. The tasting was great! I highly, highly recommend the root beer mixed with the bourbon cream when you have the tasting.
  • Saw the signs from the interstate and stopped by. Took the free tour which included the bottling room and warehouses. At the end you get to sample the products. Overall great experience.
