Air Force Armament Museum, Fort Walton Beach

From the early days of biplanes to the jet era, Air Force Armament Museum houses a huge collection of historical aircraft and weaponry. The museum’s main attractions include the legendary P-51 Mustang, arguably the ultimate piston-powered fighter, and the SR-71 Blackbird, which soared at record-breaking speeds and altitudes. Aircraft are displayed both inside and outside the building. Explore the museum's collection of bombs and missiles, featuring World War I hand grenades, laser-guided bunker busters, and more. Track the history of machine guns used in air combat and anti-aircraft defense. Admission to the museum is free, but donations are welcome. • There are 28 American war birds and a MIG-21 on display that you can walk up to and touch. The most extraordinary one, aside from the B25, B17 that saved the world during WWII, was the SR-71 that flew...  more »
  • Located just outside Eglin Air Force Base, the Armaments Museum is free (though donations are obviously encouraged). It is a much smaller facility than others offered by the Air Force in Dayton, Ohio ...  more »
  • Even though I am an Army Viet Nam vet, I found it very interesting to see the Air Force information about that conflict. There are lots of aircraft, bombs, missiles, and such. However, one of the most...  more »

  • I'm fascinated by aerospace and aviation history and museums, and this museum is not the largest, but it is a real gem! The campus of the museum, which is filled with an impressive assortment of aircraft, is open and fully accessible to anyone, even if the museum itself is closed. Feel free to pull into the parking lot and walk around the displays anytime you wish. TIP: For a great overview of the assorted aircraft on display outside, take at the look at the grounds using Google's satellite view; there are more aircraft here than you think there is just by observing things at ground-level. This is a good tip, by-the-way, for virtually all outdoor aircraft displays/museums you might wish to visit. There are many aircraft on display that you can walk right up to and touch all of them, to impart a connective feeling with the history they lived, giving me a sense of history before I was even born... Among the amazing aircraft displayed outside is the amazing SR-71 Blackbird, and it is a thrill to be able to walk around it and touch it! What an incredible machine. Here is also a B-52, the first I'd ever seen. Most of the jets and prop-driven aircraft are from the American military stable, of course, but there are a few examples from other nations as well. So even if the museum is closed, you can still walk around the grounds outside and marvel at the aircraft that has defended our nation and our freedom so well; and a special THANK YOU to all of our veterans, past , present, and future, for your service and sacrifice. God bless you all. The museum building itself (free, no admission charge! and closed on Sundays--ask me how I know...) looks deceptively smallish from the outside, but it is not; inside there is a very impressive array of aircraft, bombs, guns, cannons, firearms, even small missiles! Very interesting, very well laid out, extremely clean and impressive. And the staff there, including the veterans who volunteer their time and memories, are just the best there is! Thank you so much! The gift shop is on the smaller side, but it is packed with worthwhile gifts and you should definitely visit the gift shop before you leave. The cashier there (I'm sorry, cannot remember her name) was just as kind and nice as a person can be. I really enjoyed the hours I spent here, and would love to return here again! The diversion from I-10 to the museum is not a short one, about 20 minutes south of I-10 and just north of Ft. Walton Beach, but I've done it twice now, and it is truly worth it. Very very highly recommended!
  • Such a great attraction for the gulf coast. Best of all it's free. I think there would be very few people that wouldn't find a visit entertaining. They have a impressive collection of air craft, explosive weapons that span WW1 to current state of the art examples, great collection of guns spanning generations, and even cockpits you can sit in. If nothing else get your picture taken by the MOAB "Mother of all bombs."
  • This is an awesome museum for aircraft! My son loves airplanes, and he's not old enough to understand the engineering of it all yet, but that's why it's worth starting young. He enjoyed flipping the switches in the airplane cockpits. We had a good time. It's totally worth a family visit if you've not been and you're in the area
  • The kids loved seeing all the planes outside. There were so many to see. The museum was free of charge and everyone was so friendly. It was a nice place to visit for something different. It was neat to learn more about Eglin too.
  • One of my favorite places we went to on our trip up to northern Florida. The collection of they have on display is awe-inspiring. The outside is pet friendly, just be courteous and curb your dogs. We'll be back again for sure.
