  • The battle of Chickamauga before Chattanooga. Chickamauga was the last Confederate victory in the region. This victory was quickly forgotten as the northerners won the battle of Chattanooga some time later. Chickamauga is located in Georgia, about 15 miles south of Chattanooga. General Bragg's southern troops pushed back those of the Union general Rosecrans, in September 1863. Chattanooga fell in November of the same year, paving the way from Atlanta to northerners. The Chickamauga battlefield is huge. I did it by car. You can buy a CD ($10) at the gift shop of the Rangers; This CD, accompanied by a card, to cover the whole of the Battlefield while having clear explanations. The CD is in English. After Gettysburg (Pennsylvania) and Vicksburg (Mississippi), the battle of Chickamauga-Chattanooga was the third largest of the civil war (civil war). There were about 15000 dead on both sides. Chattanooga by northerners taking them opened the door to Atlanta, capital economic of the South. And more stops planned in the CD, the Park is filled with monuments, steles, commemorative stones, panels, etc. referring to the positions of the garrisons each Confederate State or each Northern State present at this battle. I visited the Gettysburg Battlefield and the Vicksburg Battlefield and there, here and there, this genius of Americans to build places of memory giving a pretty clear idea of the importance of these battles. I went in early April and the hardwood forest was still without leaves. So, the description of the Scrums in the forest was facilitated. Admission to the site is free.
