Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, Fort Lauderdale

4.4
#1 of 8 in Museums in Fort Lauderdale
Built in 1920, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens centers around a plantation-style building featured on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Once the winter home of Frederic Clay Bartlett and his wife Helen, it is now the residence of two American artists, but it remains open to the public. Inside you'll find the art collection and personal items from the original owners. The gardens feature five different ecosystems. Look for exotic parrots, cockatiels, and swans in the aviary, while the grounds showcase wild squirrel monkeys, gopher tortoises, and manatees. I love the Bonnet House and its history. The tours are lovely. They have several orchid houses on the grounds. This beautiful orchid had a heavenly fragrance as well. Unusual for orchids.

A facinating slice of American art history, unfortunately not disabled accessible and poorly signed. However it's worth a visit and features some wonderful artwork and early 20th century Florida history.

Really enjoyed our visit. Guides were friendly and informative. Excellent activity right in the middle of it all.

Took a tour of this beautiful property today and fell in love. As you walk to the entrance of the tour you are greeted with bright bold colors. Their love of art is reflected all through the property. Not only that but a symetrical display of odd pieces and design. Every room you walk into your eyes are shifted to the center of the room. Rich history of Fort Lauderdale and the evolution that occurred just under 100 years. Not to mention the display of love a man can have for a woman. Beautiful place. Whether you are a local or out of towner take an afternoon to explore this gem we have here.

Great tour, beautiful grounds, and a charming house. I think that the owner and designer had relatively poor taste, but it really just adds to the charm in that someone made this place home.
