  • As we were driving to the museum through the grounds of the prison it was so unappealing with the large stone walls and guard towers that we felt uncomfortable and turned around and left.  more »

  • This gated complex is right on the American River and close to Folsom Lake with all the amenities you could ever need. There are expensive facilities, dining accommodations (Tony in the kitchens is great!) and lots of activities including arts and crafts! They eschew some of the traditional approaches to vacation lodging; it is at its core a young, hip, experimental place. The hostel environment is great if you're on a budget, and we found sharing a room just adds to the laid-back feel and gives you an opportunity to get out of your comfort zone and meet new people. The only complaint I had was some of the "guards" committed a little too strongly to the theme and we were sometimes forced to stick to the daily itinerary and dress code a little too strictly (otherwise *****5***** stars!!!). I was staggered by the sheer number of clubs you can join, there was one for everyone! It really feels like you're in a brotherhood. I made some connections here I'll never forget, I can see why so many people choose this complex for their retirement. All in all, enjoyed my stay, would recommend my friends stay here too
  • Went with my family to tour the Folsom State Prison Museum and gift shop in July 2016! It was very fun and informative with interesting facts, history, and original pieces from the first few years the prison was made, and from some of the original prisoners. Also has lots of Johnny Cash information, history, and original letters and pieces from him and lots of stuff for sale in the gift shop, like Folsom Prison and Johnny Cash shirts, paintings, stamps, pins, collectables, etc. We were lucky to go at this time because we learned while visiting, that they are moving the Museum and gift shop off of the prison grounds, so it was awesome getting to see the actual prison and guards walking around. In my pictures here, you can see the actual prison in the background!
