Folsom Dam, Folsom

3.8
Folsom Dam is a concrete gravity dam on the American River of Northern California in the United States, about 25mi northeast of Sacramento. The dam is 340ft high and 1400ft long, flanked by earthen wing dams. It was completed in 1955, officially opening the following year.
Located at the juncture of the north and south forks of the American River, the dam was built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, and was transferred to the United States Bureau of Reclamation upon its completion. The dam and its reservoir, Folsom Lake, are part of the Central Valley Project, a multipurpose project that provides flood control, hydroelectricity, and irrigation and municipal water supply. In order to increase Sacramento's flood protection to 200 year flood protection (meaning that the area is protected from a flood that has a 0.5% chance of occurring in any given year) the US Army Corp of Engineers is constructing an auxiliary spillway. The spillway is scheduled to be completed by October 2017, and will enable Folsom dam to release water before it reaches the height of the gates already in place.
Another Central Valley Project dam, Nimbus Dam, is located further down river.

  • Beware that one can drive past it and park in the nearby trails to bike or walk past it. It is not like the traditional state dams where one can park in a parking lot and walk near it to view. You.....  more »
  • Nice view, nice lake above the dam. Nothing super special here. Johnny cash bike trail was really nice and a good way to see the dam.  more »

  • A spectacular Folsom Treasure we now only see from a distance... Folsom Dam is a fascinating landmark and it is a shame that terrorist threats have forced the government to close public access. I still vividly remember touring inside before the September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. We visited deep in the dank moist bowels of the dam and looked out over the area from the tower up on the old dam road.
  • Great place to work. Great group of people working towards sustainable use of natural resources for many generations.
  • Nice spot to see while traveling, unfortunately no option to stop by.
  • This place was low-key lit. There is a nice lake beach which I enjoyed sitting at while I was eating some very nice extra large air. There is alot of places where you can walk and run. You can also move around with good leg room. I also like the sun their as it is very warm. There are slopes where you can bike down at fast speeds.
  • This is a pretty cool dam to see. Unfortunately there isn't a really good place to stop and look at it. They recently built a whole new spillway which runs parallel to the road that passes by.
