Heceta Head Lighthouse, Florence

4.6
Projecting the strongest light on the Oregon coast, Heceta Head Lighthouse is part of a state park. Perched on a small peninsula with boulders that act as natural wave breakers, the lighthouse is a beacon for many seafarers. From the building's deck, you can see land that is thick with fir trees, making a striking contrast with the deep blue water. Tours begin on the first floor of the keeper's quarters and end on the deck of the lighthouse. Tours are free, donations are welcome, and parking requires a per-vehicle fee. Consider taking an extra day to tour the area so you can stay a night at the inn inside the keeper's quarters. • This location has easy parking access with trailer parking, and easy return to the highway north or south. There is a public bathroom at the lower parking lot and a portable near the lighthouse (.5 mile walk), the path itself is a short packed gravel walk with a bit of an incline. As for access to the waters edge from your car, it is a short walk. The walk to the lighthouse is not too steep but I would not want to push a wheelchair up it even though it may be possible to do so. Overall this is a good place to stretch your legs and see some great views. If your heading towards Florence with the sun setting there is a turnout for good pictures on the way back with miles of dunes to photograph.
  • A fantastic stop! Take your time and walk around the beach as well as the short hike up to the lighthouse. The park guides and volunteers are helpful and super knowledgeable. Don't hesitate to strike up a conversation with them.
  • I love light houses and this one is beautiful, the hike is easy, just pay for parking and hang out. The bridge is pretty cool as well, they have gnarly swells during the winter months.
  • I have seen pictures of this light all my life, but living in the east I wasn't sure if I'd ever get the chance to visit. My son and I recently took a roadtrip from Seattle to WV and this was a must stop. I assumed from all the pictures I'd seen that the parking would be level with the lighthouse. That is not the case. The parking area is roughly near sea level and the light is about 200 feet up the headland. There is a an asphalt walking path up to the light. You can't really see the lighthouse from the parking level, only the keeper's house. There is a great view of the light just south at a pulloff on US 101.
  • Definitely pretty. I was not able to tour it, but better planning next time. It is a little walk - I only note that if it is a problem.
