Darlingtonia State Natural Site (18 acres) is a state park and botanical preserve located five miles (8.0 km) north of Florence, Oregon, United States on U.S. Route 101, just west of Mercer Lake and south of Sutton Lake that is dedicated to the preservation of a rare plant. It couldn't be easier to arrange your visit to Darlingtonia State Natural Site and many more Florence attractions: make an itinerary online using Inspirock's Florence trip itinerary planning website.
Darlingtonia californica is a carnivorous plant, commonly known as the cobra lily, which traps insects in its hollow tubular leaves, whose top is flared into a hollow dome with a forked "tongue" that gives the species its common name. In late spring, they bear purple and yellow flowers that rise above the green cobra-like leaves. Darlingtonia are found only in wet meadows and bogs with acidic soils low in nitrogen. The rare, strangely shaped plant is the only member of the pitcher plant family Sarraceniaceae in Oregon.
The park has a short loop trail through a peat bog area overlooking patches of Darlingtonia. It is the only Oregon state park dedicated to the protection of a single plant species.

This is a nicely maintained and interesting garden to visit. It's free, and a quick stop. You can walk your dogs there.

Very small parking lot can sometimes get crowded for a few. Most people don't stay too long though. Bathroom building at the parking lot and picnic tables for a snack break. Fascinating area. Very short walk to the observation deck. I like how they have signs explaining about the area and plants. Tends to be sunnier than the coast if it's a foggy day. A cute stop while in Florence.
Really cool detour off the main highway to see some truly fascinating carnivorous plants. A short walk into the woods leads you to this other world where these things cover the ground - even in the winter! Highly recommend for any nature-lover looking for an interesting stop whole visiting the coast.
This is such an interesting, peaceful find just off 101. It's not much of a walk from the parking lot and is ADA accessible (paved path and boardwalk). There are picnic tables and restrooms next to the parking lot. We visited Father's Day weekend and there was only one other vehicle in the small parking lot.
Nice little trail featuring a stand if native pitcher plants. Very cool. Right off highway, so unfortunately loud. Otherwise a nice walk
Pretty cool little park. The flesh eating pants are a short walk from the parking lot maybe a 100ft. The trail is paved and accessible with a wheelchair or stroller
