Hill–Stead Museum is a Colonial Revival house and art museum set on a large estate at 35 Mountain Road in Farmington, Connecticut. It is best known for its French Impressionist masterpieces, architecture, and stately grounds. The property was designated a National Historic Landmark as a nationally significant example of Colonial Revival architecture, built in 1901 to designs that were the result of a unique collaboration between Theodate Pope Riddle, one of the United States' first female architects, and the renowned firm of McKim, Mead & White. The house was built for Riddle's father, Alfred Atmore Pope, and the art collection it houses was collected by Pope and Riddle.Plan to see Hill-Stead Museum and other attractions that appeal to you using our Farmington day trip site.

We took a tour of the interior of this historic home. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the art pieces inside and knew fascinating details about them and the family which collected them... more »
I visited Hill Stead years ago and enjoyed the experience. However, even with the relaxing of the Covid Panic, they haven't gotten their act together. Last fall, I walked over while staying at a... more »
Easily the worst museum visit of my life, and I am 63 and have been to the world's great museums. I'll explain why below. First, there are mostly very minor paintings, most not very good; most... more »
A small gem of home that is a museum in which one feels like a guest invited to enjoy a Sunday dinner. But where one is surrounded by impressionist masterpieces and other art like Sung Period Chinese vases and Japanese prints. I visited on a perfect June day when the gardens were at a peak.. The tour had only 7 people and a knowledgeable guide. It lasted about an hour but I could have stayed the day and not had enough. Worth a detour and give it a super rating.
Wonderful grounds and gardens. A true inspiration for Connecticut gardeners. The house museum is great as well. Allow an hour for the house and another hour for the gardens.
A great tour and an opportunity to get a taste of the Guilded Age. The house is beautiful and well preserved. There is a variety of Impressionist art that you can only see here as they do not travel. Check out the website. The tour guides are knowledgeable and take their time . The grounds are beautiful!
We didnt go into the museum but rather say on a bench and read . The grounds are breathtaking set up on a small hill looking out over the valley. I have been in the museum several times and it is wonderful also.
Touring a rich old white persons house... If that's what looks fun for you then I recommend going. Good art pieces and interesting history.
