The American Airpower Museum, is an aviation museum located on the former site of Republic Aviation at Republic Airport in East Farmingdale, New York. It maintains a collection of aviation artifacts and an array of aircraft spanning the many years of the aircraft factory's history. The museum is one of relatively few worldwide that actually flies historic aircraft. It operates an original Republic P-47D fighter among others in its airworthy fleet. The museum has many static displays which includes a Republic F-84 first generation jet fighter, a rare example of the swept-wing RF-84F reconnaissance variant, and an Republic F-105 Thunderchief. The last production aircraft was the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II.The museum has a group of volunteers which includes both former Republic workers and veterans of all branches of the military. A flight experience is available on board a C-47 aircraft which actually flew during the Normandy invasion on D-Day.For several years the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had been pursuing a $10.6 million plan to tear down the 35000sqft hangar built around 1940 and replace it with a safety apron at the end of a north-south runway to provide more room for emergency stops. In March 2011 Democrats Charles Schumer and Steve Israel said that the FAA stated it was not necessary for the hangar to be torn down, but if it was, federal money could be used to help relocate the hangar

  • Snacks available for purchase. Rugged museum, with a lot of fun exhibits for adults and children! Favorite part was the B-17 cockpit. The models and small displays were really cool. Lots of authentic pictures of old GIs and old uniforms. The Tuskegee Airman exhibit was done really well too.
  • Small and personal, great static displays. We where fortunate today that they were doing rides in there C47. Must go
  • flew with Paul, great guy very trusting, he let me fly! What a thrill! Everone must take a visit to the museum and go on a flight.
  • Really cool museum with an array of older military aircraft. Some displays are interactive as you can sit in the cockpit and touch all you want. All workers are volunteers the young kids know there stuff too. A few older volunteers who are closer to the history. Decent prices really know reason not to go if your in the area or need a day trip.
  • Bought an awesome flight jacket for $30 @ the museum store as a great souvenir! Gotta go check this place out! They will take you in the air and do a fly by with 1940's WWII gear and everything... go!
