Fairbanks
The Golden Heart City
With its strip malls and fast-food restaurants, Fairbanks appears a bit functional on first glance. This city of about 32,000, though, serves as a base for memorable adventures in the dramatic surrounding landscape. The mountains draw hiking and biking enthusiasts, while the rivers serve up prime canoeing and kayaking. Fairbanks itself offers plenty to hold visitors' interest too. Numerous attractions pay homage to the city's gold-mining heritage and the area's Native American communities. Fairbanks' true highlights reveal themselves, though, between late September and early April--this is when the Northern Lights put on colorful displays in the night sky. Where to stay in Fairbanks

Downtown Fairbanks holds the highest concentration of accommodations, and here you'll find everything from hotels for business travelers to cozy bed and breakfasts. The area just across the Chena River from downtown features a few establishments that serve as convenient alternatives should you be unable to secure a place to stay downtown. The areas around the airport and the University of Alaska feature numerous accommodations, including bed and breakfasts and small inns in addition to hotels for business travelers. Just outside of town you'll find lodges, cottages, and additional bed and breakfasts that feature quieter settings closer to the mountains.
