Calf Creek Falls Recreation Area, Escalante

(4.8/5 based on 440+ reviews on the web)
Stretch your legs and soak up Utah's astounding natural beauty at Calf Creek Falls Recreation Area. The towering waterfalls are the highlight of the rocky park, with the lower tier reaching 38 m (126 ft) and the upper tier plunging from 27 m (88 ft) further up. Most visitors to the area walk the lower-tier trail, a moderate 8.6 km (5.5 mi) hike traversing mainly sandy paths, while the more adventurous can scramble the extra 1.6 km (1 mi) to reach the upper falls. There is a dearth of amenities, so make sure to bring plenty of snacks and water. Take a break and refuel at one of the picnic tables provided. • The trail is about six miles round trip and moderate to simple. the slick rock walls of the canyon are inspiring and the small creek sounds are comforting. I can get hot in there and take water.  more »

  • One of the best moderate hikes in the state. Scenery is great the whole time and the falls at the end are a great payoff.
  • Easily one of the most beautiful hikes I've done in Utah. The journey round trip was about 6.1 miles (says iPhone gps), but it is in no way a strenuous hike. It was mostly just flat sand trails the whole way. It was also cool that they have trail markers with interesting facts about that specific spot, it gave us cool insights but also gave us an idea of how much of the hike we had left. In total it took us about 4 hours there and back with a 30 minute break when we got to the falls itself.
  • Great waterfall. Heat can be a factor from june to September.
  • The Lower Falls are such a beautiful hidden gem. The hike in can be long and definitely hot during the summer, but it's still a relatively easy hike to do! I love that you really don't see any signs of the falls on the way in at all - you just mostly follow the stream on the way in, but the falls are obscured until the final moments, when you start to hear some rushing water, then turn a corner and find that hidden oasis. Packing in layers in the early spring is a good idea - even if the hike in feels warm, it will be much cooler by the falls themselves!
  • Beautiful and easy hike to a beautiful destination. The waterfall is amazing. Good photo-opportunities. Love it.
