Calf Creek Falls Recreation Area, Escalante

4.8
#1 of 12 in Things to do in Escalante
Stretch your legs and soak up Utah's astounding natural beauty at Calf Creek Falls Recreation Area. The towering waterfalls are the highlight of the rocky park, with the lower tier reaching 38 m (126 ft) and the upper tier plunging from 27 m (88 ft) further up. Most visitors to the area walk the lower-tier trail, a moderate 8.6 km (5.5 mi) hike traversing mainly sandy paths, while the more adventurous can scramble the extra 1.6 km (1 mi) to reach the upper falls. There is a dearth of amenities, so make sure to bring plenty of snacks and water. Take a break and refuel at one of the picnic tables provided. • The Meandering Canyon is quite scenic. Wildlife are all around. We saw a few deer, and some unusual birds in the stream. We hiked this trail in the winter when there was frozen ice in the stream, and ...  more »
  • Amazing hike, beautiful waterfall. The temperature was around 117. We had taken plenty of water and started early. Best to be off trail by noon, or spend all day at the waterfall and hike out in the e...  more »

  • Seriously so beautiful and so worth it! The trail was easy but long and mostly through sand. The scenery along the trail couldn’t be beat! We took 4 kids (ages 15-5) on the 6 mile round-trip trek and it took just under 3 hours.
  • Went early September around 2pm. It was about 105 degrees outside. Easy 3 mile hike each way, only the heat made it difficult. Expect to take about 2 hours to hike one-way and you'll probably spend at least an hour at the waterfall. The waterfall was beautiful and flowing. Water was chilly but still enjoyable for a swim. Bring a flash light if you plan on starting this hike mid afternoon as you'll probably be hiking back in the dark.
  • Lovely mildly strenuous hike of a little over 3 miles each way to shady grove with 126-foot waterfall into a sand-bottom pool. VERY cold water! Great vistas, changes from sun to shade and back, diverse terrain and rock formations.
  • Really pretty hike. I love that you can easily get above and below the falls
  • One of the best moderate hikes in the state. Scenery is great the whole time and the falls at the end are a great payoff. We went on a clear day in March and had the trail and the falls to ourselves!
