  • Tent camping, limited spaces, but great views. Road a little tricky going up/down, would be a real PITA if rain/soaked on. Terrific Views of the valley and the mining at south. Only saw 2-3 tent sites so limited and parking is just straight in. One-holer there.
  • my wife and I drove up here on a cross state trip across Nevada. The weather was cold but clear. Yes we did find garnets in the hard rhyolite. Like the other reviewer said the garnets are small but really nice with the promise of finding a whole lot more and larger too. It was a lot of fun for the both of us. Bring rock tools. Nearest hotels are in Ely, and the one we stayed at is the Four Sevens...a great place low in price and very comfortable. We definitely will be back again and we will be bringing friends and family!
  • This place was pretty interesting. Broke rocks to look for Gems, went for a Geocache hunt and enjoyed the views.
  • The Ely District's only rock hound / gem collecting site. We came up on a snowy New Year's Eve and had very limited success searching down the hillside south of the parking area (partially due to snow cover / wetness) and also not exactly knowing what to look for amongst all that pink shale. My wife searched the embankment RIGHT NEXT to the parking area on the north/uphill side and we easily found them. She was looking for rocks with quartz sparkling in them and more times than not, it had garnets. Most were actually yellowish white (see pics). So much so that our 7 year old daughter was overly successful in finding them too. Sooo, good luck. :)
  • Took us a bit but once we started finding the garnets we couldn't stop.
