Coast Guard Beach, Eastham
(4.6/5 based on 420+ reviews on the web)
At Coast Guard Beach, watch shorebirds such as plovers and terns nesting in mudflats during the warmer months, and spot harbor seals in the winter. From the sandy strand, walk down the pathway and cross the bicycle trail bridge to get to the salt marsh. In the mating season at low tide, observe the seals "hauling out" onto the marsh. Ask a park ranger to tell you more about their mating habits. Amenities include limited parking, seasonal restrooms, and a wheelchair-accessible ramp. • Easily accessible by bike. Parking is probably more difficult in season. We went in Oct. and basically had the beach to ourselves. We even saw whales!
  • Many whales close to shore. No need for binoculars. They breached, slapped their tails, opened their mouths, etc. Very exciting! Also saw lots of seals all along the coast.
  • This beach is always in the top 10 of the world, but does get crowded in summer, no surprise. The farther you walk from the lifeguard station the less crowded it is, and still not wall to wall people ...  more »
